The ECAC is a better conference with Quinnipiac in it and you want us to leave? Are you that jealous of our success?

I've said this before and I'll say it again, you need to start with blaming the archaic Ivy League restrictions. NIL and the portal have had a huge impact on D-I hockey. If programs don't get on the bus they'll for sure get left behind.

We're not doing anything that any other program wouldn't do if given the chance. Pecknold is playing within the rules, not bending or breaking them.

And if you think academics aren't relevant at QU then you really are short-sighted and know nothing about our school or our program. One of the main reasons we joined the ECAC was to help elevate our academics.

Having worked at an Ivy school and in research I can tell you money for research is from grants and those grants ae very specific and the funds are not going to go to fund anything but the research that the grant was funded for ie direct costs like supplies and sealeries. On top of that the funding is also given to those institutions for indirect costs like maintenance, building operations and IT. Harvard happens to have the highest rate of indirect costs of any university of 69% as of 2024 so for a $100,000 grant the university gets an additional $69,000 for indirect costs. In 2024 Harvard got $488 million dollars in NIH grant money you do the math. None of this would go to support hockey just research and associated indirect costs.

I'm sure you are aware that Quinnipiac was voted in by the members of the ECAC, including your esteemed institution, more than 20 years ago. Apparently you feel they should apologize because they are not Ivy League quality, but they never made such a claim when they applied for admission. The interesting thing is you act as if they are some kind of community college, when they've actually made tremendous strides. When I moved to CT a little over 30 years ago they were a tiny, locally-known college with a small campus and limited academic offerings in the shadow of Sleeping Giant State Park. In the interim they added two more campuses, a world class polling institute, a law school, med school, new programs such as engineering (note: 20 years ago Harvard and Yale didn't have engineering either), etc. Whatever commitments they made when they were admitted, I'm quite sure they've exceeded them.

We know Ivy League schools consider themselves to be in a separate class and they do have academic requirements in excess of many schools, but let's not pretend that they don't make accommodations for athletes and provide extensive support services. I went to an Ivy League grad school and I remember sitting for an exam in a room that had been used by a class that was apparently handing out group assignments. I recognized about 2/3 of the hockey roster on the board. Care to bet on the difficulty level of that course?

It has nothing to do with jealousy. I never said you guys were breaking the rules, did I? My point was that the ECAC is NOT a level playing field. If schools choose not to participate in NIL or the portal, they should be punished for it? Really? You guys joined the ECAC coming from D-2 - you were hoping Hockey East would take you back in 2003? Please. You're pouring money into hockey because you want to play with the big boys. One of your donors said as much on a broadcast years ago on the Big Ten network when you guys played Michigan. Why can't you just accept that fact? I've pushed for the Ivies to leave the ECAC for several years because I could see what was coming. Why get all prickly about it? Afraid you'd have trouble dominating HE? Mayne that is at the core of your angst.

You're wrong about engineering - Harvard has had engineering as an offering for over 40 years. I know because one of my friends was an engineering major.

I never referred to Quinnipiac as a community college or second rate school. It has a terrific business program. My post wasn't about academics per se. It had to do with how hockey programs are run at the collegiate level. And if you don't believe in what I'm saying, you obviously missed what Pierre McGuire said during the ECAC semis when he shared that the NHL now looks at US colleges as a feeder for their teams. You think that NHL scouts care about GPAs? I have spoken to several scouts from Tampa Bay, Anaheim and the NJ Devils and all they are looking for is whether or not the kid is a 'fit' for their system and can make their organization better. That's it.

It would help if you people could read but I guess that's too much to ask. Also, you need to be less defensive every time someone offers a view that doesn't jive with your rah rah, we're the best mentality.

We did not come to the ECAC from D-2. As far as I know we've never had HE aspirations. John Lahey wanted QU to be with the Ivy's.

Who's the prickly one here? All you ever do is complain about us. We didn't create NIL or the portal or the convoluted NCAA rules... but we have found a successful way to play with those constraints. Don't blame us because your beloved Harvard doesn't think they're worthy enough to pursue.

Personally I think a move to HE isn't right for us. But if it were to happen I believe we'd be successful there as well.

If you want to get technical about it, Harvard and Yale had sub-schools of engineering. Yale called their’s the Faculty of Engineering under the School of Science. Harvard called it something similar. Both offered an extremely limited number of programs (in fact, to this day they don’t come close to offering the full array of majors available at leading engineering schools). Engineering had, at best, secondary or tertiary status. I remember taking my daughter to visit Harvard and when we left she said, “Dad, they don’t have a real school of engineering do they?” As a result she never applied. Unfortunately, she turned down an RPI scholarship for the other Mem Drive school we visited that day.

A couple of years later Harvard announced it was upgrading to a School of Engineering and surprise, surprise Yale did the same a few months later.

In Q’s case they also offer a limited number of engineering majors. However, they at least have a connection to hockey. I believe it was the Clifton brothers that majored in Mech E. That’s how I learned QU, a school with which I have no connection other than as a visiting fan, had started engineering offerings. I’m sure RPI, Clarkson and Cornell, the traditional engineering programs in the ECAC, wonder how they got away.

Lastly, NHL teams have looked for years to colleges as a source of players. Harvard has had more than its share of drafted prospects - far more than Quinnipiac. In fact, Harvard’s traditional competitors for players have resources well beyond Quinnipiac’s. If your concern is the Bobcats are unfair competition then I guess you’ve accepted that Harvard’s pathetic Beanpot performance is permanent. Are you going to pull out in favor of a more worthy participant?

Quinnipiac was one of the teams in on the Ruck twins who chose North Dakota. Good to see this team continue to remain aggressive in recruiting better players
