Providence College 2025-26 Official Season-Long Thread

I'd be curious if they dip into the NHL draft prospects again, like with McQueen, if a kid drafted last year needs some more work or playing time to improve his game, Maybe not a first rounder this year, possibly less of a chance of losing that player after one season.

Thomas Vandenberg. CSB ranked 35. Played at Ottawa this year 25-25-50 and 4-3-7

Overall think roster pretty set with 2 players from last week + Baldwin and at least 3 forwards they recruited 2-3 years ago

So possibly look for forward #15

More important need a solid #2 goalie. I’d think dip into CHL. Leaman also said when got Simpson several other potentials didn’t want to leave their team mid season

Providence landed an OHL goalie. Ben Hrebik. In fact one who had a very strong playoff season this year. Also 26-11 with .920 save percent and a 2.81. His Barrie team got to OHL finals

This year he was teammate of future Friar Nick Desiderio. Last year Beau Jelsma

My suspicion is he has been committed for a long time, just preferred to keep it as quiet as possible from his team as many recruits seems. Jelsma might have done the same thing based on his announcement date (almost a year to the day)

If all had gone according to plan PC would be replacing there 4 year work horse, Jack Parsons would be largely untested, Michael Simpson would have spent the winter in Savannah. Thus from the get go Providence would have been looking for their next goalie. Thus I believe they had him lined up for some time. If you check Leaman interviews at time they got Simpson he mentioned their first direction was to see if a goalie would come mid season from juniors. It also seems PC did not go out of way to retain Simpson, who had but one year left of eligibility

Bottom line will be interesting goalie situation. Will Leaman change philosophy and rotate them or will there be an early season competition winner gets job? Certainly goalie of Hrebik’s quality isn’t coming in to play a couple of games

Like Parsons he’s an ‘06 and on the draft board. Quite likely both he and Parsons will be drafted this summer

I was pleasantly surprised, relieved somewhat, to see that PC found their goalie-2. Someone with considerable playing experience, but, unlike Simpson, someone younger and still draft eligible. Not surprised PC has yet to catch a high-end, likely first round pick similar to McQueen. The partnership was beneficial to both - it showed what PC can do, but it also matured McQueen and gave him that exposure to a bigger challenge at the college level.

Hrebik and now Ryder Cali incoming for 26-27 season. Didn't know much about Cali but looks to be a projected second rounder. Maybe they'll get at least a couple years out of him than the first rounders they've had. I don't know if that's it for the additions.

Wow, missed this news, good catch.

Unless they change the cap that is 26 players

Team will have great depth

While by transfer era standards it’s a small recruiting class it seems it’s going a bit under the radar

Has 2 drafted players Baldwin (TB) and Klippstein (Minn)
3 top 51 CSB rated forwards who will be drafted Cali, Vandenberg, and Zielinski
Hrebik is solid bet to be drafted. Certainly if Phil never got hurt, Parson didn’t get the experience to make it his job, Hrebik would come in with seemingly the #1
Plus solid USHL Forward in J J Montiero who just scored 14 points in teams run to Clark Cup

Does your 26 include McEnery or no? I thought I saw he still hadn't transferred... but he was a DSA which doesn't count against the final number, if I understood that right. He only matters for roster numbers as he barely played year 1.

What I've watched of JJ in the USHL, the extra year did him a lot of good to improve his game. Same with Sisson, who if he stuck with PC then you probably miss out on Klippstein and/or Cali. I hadn't paid much attention to Cali's name in mock drafts but it feels like his rise was pretty sharp. Having a chance to utilize NCAA for what it should be meant as (developmental) gaining Cali was smarter than chasing a top-15 potential pick to come in just to be gone in a year.

No I figure McEnery is gone regardless but as you say they can carry him as a DSA

Definitely can see the number crunch with Sisson. On the other hand if he delayed he would lose a year of eligibility. Even if eventually this summer they increase roster size then it’s a playing time crunch.
