Robert, what are your thoughts on the b18 volleyball tournament?
It's been talked about for at least a couple years now, and the concern was always what effect a conference tournament would have on teams playing a bunch of VB right before heading into the NCAA tournament. Would three or more matches tire them out, and hurt their performance in the NCAAs, etc. But the SEC held a conference tournament last year, and went on to have a good NCAA overall, so that kind undercut that argument. Since then, everyone pretty much expected that B1G would follow suit with a tournament. And they're doing some interesting things with the scheduling to mitigate the potential for wearing out the teams with too much VB in a compressed period of time.
Up til now, the regular season was 20 matches, played over ten weeks, so two per week/weekend. Common for teams to play Friday/Saturday, or Friday/Sunday, and often with minimal travel in between; that is, Wisconsin might play at Northwestern on Friday night, then Illinois Saturday or Sunday. Of someone might play at Wisconsin Friday, then at Minnesota Saturday or Sunday. But a couple times through the ten weeks, somebody will play on a Wednesday night - and be featured on BTN - then play only once Saturday or Sunday.
But even more so when they went to 18 teams, a 20 match schedule was 'clunky', because it meant playing all 17 other teams once, but three teams a second time. So they kind of solve that AND mitigate the "lots of VB in a compressed time" problem by cutting the regular season to just 17 matches, once per team. And cutting the ten week schedule down to eight weeks, instead of nine, as one might have thought they would. Guessing a little here, somewhere in the eight weeks, everyone will play three times in that week, Wednesday and then Saturday and Sunday. But then when the tournament comes, it gets played Friday-through-Sunday, rest day Monday, and 'final four' Tuesday and Wednesday. That Wednesday will be the night before Thanksgiving, meaning they'll have the whole of Thanksgiving weekend off leading into "Selection Sunday" for the NCAAs, and the two teams that played for the championship will have at least until the next Thursday (or Friday) for their first NCAA tournament match; a full week off (or more for the two that lose in the semis) between the end of the B1G tournament and the start of the NCAAs.
Downside for us is only eight or nine home conference matches, instead of ten.
It will interesting, and probably good for TV ratings, etc.
