St. Lawrence U.

This year's final NPI: LIU 42, Army 45, Ferris State 56, and SLU 61. Not exactly heavyweights, but fair and balanced!

my theory is that since this is a shorter turnaround and most schedules are finalized, the Riley family coaching dynasty pulled some strings. LIU (Brendan), Ferris State (Brett), and Army (Jack assistant coach, Brian just retired as HC) all employ one of the Rileys. The only SLU connection I can see is Rob Riley being AC at SLU for 1 season in 80-81 before his long tenure at Army, but I might just be missing some other connection

Yeah--unsurprising. Gotta love the portal, eh? What's the long view for a school of our size and location? Hello D3? Yikes.

Starting with the Carvel debacle, the administration's goal at SLU has been to drop the program down... going to be tough to see Appleton with 6 spectators watching SLU play Morrisville soon.

That may be true, I'm not close enough to know. My sense is that the Carvel departure was not just about $$, but I'm sure it was a factor. The arena upgrades in recent years sends mixed messages though.

Clearly these small privates are largely disadvantaged by the outright greed that has transformed the landscape of college sports in general, but there may be opportunities too. When you only have one flagship sports program, along with the increased pool of players as a result of granting eligibility to the Canadian juniors, and a small but strong alumni, they should be able to marshal the resources to be competitive. Is the commitment there? I don't know. Be interested to know what measures are being taken to retain Svartstrom. May not be successful but like to think an effort is being put forth. Not that one kid is the end all be all, but others are watching

I remain cautiously optimistic as I truly believe dropping the hockey programs to D3 would be disastrous for the university

I was just reminded of the first game I saw at Appleton as a freshman. Michigan State was the opponent, and we won. Time to see past the doom and gloom and just root for the team, I guess. We certainly live in interesting times.

Svardstrom to UNH ... the quick signing makes me think this was in the works for a while. C'est la Vie.

I think SLU is struggling mightily as a university in recent years, I'm not sure a D1 hockey program helps in any measurable way. Outside of the Clarkson game there are more people in Sergi's on Friday/Saturday nights.
