I think it is possible, even likely, that because he is about to do the biggest TACO of his life he needs an even bigger stink to hide it behind. He would rather fight "you are a traitor" from his ever growing army of enemies than "you betrayed us" from his few remaining friends.

His worldview and rhetoric helped create this situation, and morally weakened Americans to the point where we could commit the ultimate crime against humanity.
Iran is able to hit the very regional base from which our attacks originate. Our attacks are no longer one-way, as they were in all prior Middle Eastern campaigns. That is a critical strategic change. This despite us sacrificing our population's health, welfare and future to feed our military for the last 75 years.
The Conservative Plan was: give all our wealth to Raytheon and Lockheed and in exchange they (ahem, we...) provide lethal military force to impose our commercial empire, so Americans writ large can continue to support the relative quality of life we got addicted to after WW2. The result: the quality of life of the median American at home was hollowed out, but at least we had the Harkonnen occupations to ensure resource imperialism. But now it looks like American military force can't protect itself against asymmetric force. The Iranians nightly erode their fuel, logistics, and radar, and incrementally render the American forward deployment less efficient and less effective.
When we are forced in a corner, we still have the final nuclear solution. Do you trust a nation of consumers brainwashed by ads and screens and alienated from its humanity by the viciousness of capitalism not to use it? Not Dump. Not the Big Bad Elites. The Norman Rockwell Vox Populi itself?
A country that elected Dump could also use nukes. They have shown their level of moral degradation.
