Ohio State Women's Hockey 2025-26

Sara Swiderski is supposed to be back for next weekend's series at Wisconsin, which will definitely help. Leah Wicks is a defender. We have two lines of forwards and two extra forwards which Coach rotates in there to keep us fresh. Taylor Kressin is a goaltender. We are supposed to get Sara Swiderski back for next weekend's series at Wisconsin, so that will get us back to having three lines of defenders. Wish we were not missing five players, but then those are the kinds of players you want Coach to be recruiting.
Thanks OSU86. Yep yesterday it showed Klein as a D. Just a glitch in the software that doesn’t know what to do when there is only 8 forwards I guess.

Good job OSU taking care of the first order of business, getting that first sweep without the Olympians.

Final Score From Saturday, January 31st
Ohio State 3
Minnesota-Duluth 1

The Sweet 16 Complete The Sweep

Crazy busy weekend. It now seems to be Monday morning. Yet I haven't said a thing about Saturday's game. Rather than wait any longer, here's a slightly abbreviated version of the 3 Stars.

On Friday I noted that the Buckeyes offered up a Baker's Dozen of Skaters. Add in the three goalies and you've got a Sweet 16, Grabbing both wins against a gritty Bulldog team was indeed a Sweet Result.

Three Stars of the Game: Decidedly Unofficial & Just For Fun

Honorable Mention: Ashley Messier, Minnesota-Duluth
Wasn't thrilled with the penalty Messier took near the end of the game. But you have to be impressed with Ashley's leadership on defense. Among other things, her 5 Blocked Shots dwarfed all other players.

#3 Star: Kaia Malachino, Ohio State
Kaia got some time as the trigger woman on the Buckeye PP. Her right-handed shot looked awfully good from the left wing circle. Malachino closed out the scoring with a real net-ripper to the upper right hand corner. The valuable insurance tally was the only PP goal of the day.

#2 Star: Jocelyn Amos, Ohio State
Another game; another clutch Amos goal. Amos would have had a second marker, but for a goaltender interference call -- which Jocelyn had nothing to do with. The one that counted? Just the GWG; that's all.

#1 Star: Hailey MacLeod, Ohio State
Goals were hard to come by in the rematch. In the end, the Buckeyes had enough firepower to prevail. But without Hailey, the result could easily have flipped. MacLeod's 32 Saves included many quality stops. On at least two occasions Bulldog shooters came in on the Buckeye net all alone. Hailey just said No. Glad she's on our side.

Next Stargazing: Valentine's Weekend Series Against Minnesota. Competing With The Gophers Is Always An Honor; Maybe Even A Labor Of Love. But That's Probably Where The Love Ends. This Top 3 Series Won't Be For The Faint Of Heart!

Looking past the Badgers huh? :)

In a battle of two elite teams that are having to navigate through the Olympics and not having several key players, the Buckeyes took the first game in this series by a final score of 4-1. Ohio State's Jordyn Petrie and Sloane Matthews scored the game's first two goals to give the visiting team a 2-0 lead at the first intermission.. Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period so the teams went into the final intermission with Ohio State still leading 2-0. The Buckeyes would get goals from first-years Maxine Cimoroni and Kassidy Carmichael in the third period to take an insurmountable 4-0 lead. Wisconsin got a late goal from Ava Murphy to avoid a shutout and make the final score 4-1. The Buckeyes outshot the Badgers 39-31 in this one. Buckeye netminder Hailey MacLeod continued to be solid in net, stopping 30 of the 31 shots she faced to get the win. Wisconsin goaltender Rhyah Stewart stopped 35 of the 39 shots she faced. The two teams will wrap up their series tomorrow at 3:00 pm EST.

In case Buckeye fans weren't watching, Raunio goes hard into the boards, comes down awkwardly, and comes up with a left hand/wrist injury, Straight to the bench, and then the locker room. Early first period, so we'll see if she comes back out.

--------------

The main Olympics web site has 'time on ice' stats that they are updating 'live', so I don't have to rely on spotting her back on the ice (something I'm not particularly good at), so we know that she didn't come back out in the rest of the first period. Could be 'precautionary', I guess, because the game is turning into a bit of a blowout; Sweden dominating France, 3-0 end of the 1st period.

--------------

Raunio never did come back out. That's unfortunate for her.

Egads! The Darth Vader look just isn't a hockey look! Their softball team is also wearing Darth Vader uniforms playing the Badger softball team someplace warm LOL. She probably stole the idea from them.
My daughter was a prospect for Michigan's softball team back in the day, the Ohio State coach we had didn't want Ohio girls. I could see myself in Maize & Blue if she did but an injury her senior year of HS killed it.

I thought the first period today we came out flat and sluggish and Wisconsin was firing on all cylinders. We were far from done in the third but the back to back penalties were the dagger.
The mental errors at the worst possible moment cost us a chance to tie it and win just like in the last National Championship game! 😡

Those two penalties at the end definitely killed any chance we had at trying to tie it up.

Wisconsin came back today with a 4-1 win to move back into first place in the WCHA standings. With Wisconsin's remaining conference schedule, the Julianne Bye Cup will likely remain in Madison. The Badgers came out with a goal from Lacey Eden in the first period to take a 1-0 lead into the first intermission. Cassie Hall scored a breakaway goal in the second period to put Wisconsin up 2-0. Kaia Malachino pulled Ohio State to within 1 with a goal later in the middle frame and the teams went into the final intermission with the Badgers leading 2-1. Wisconsin would get power play goals from Laney Potter and Finley McCarthy late in the third period to put this one away. Wisconsin really stifled the Buckeye offense today and outshot Ohio State 30-21. Wisconsin netminder Rhyah Stewart stopped 20 of the 21 shots she faced to get the win. Hailey MacLeod got the start in net for Ohio State and stopped 26 of the 30 shots she faced in the loss. Ohio State will return home for a big series against the Minnesota Gophers. Wisconsin will travel to Minnesota State for a pair of games against the Mavericks.

I was fully expecting another thrashing but I guess the near perfection they played in game one just was not replicable. I don't ever want to feel that way again. It was like playing the rodent Kessel teams. You hope you win, but reality is a dark place. UW had no chance in game one.
