CHL to NCAA Recruiting Megathread

Any intel on new incoming recruits to UNH
Cam Macdonald
Kristian Coombs

Would it be possible to take it one more step and compare how the classes each Hockey East team is bringing in. With Merrimack adding Flamand yesterday I believe there are about 32 CHL/Usport recruits coming in. Several teams have bet the farm these players will be important pueces.

Cam MacDonald i can do- Coombs has only played SJHL so i’m not really familiar with him. Probably won’t be able to do it until tonight though.

That does sound intriguing, but it will take a while to prep. Plus there are plenty of rumors coming about regarding some of the really high end guys. I think it’ll be a lot different within a month or so. Would be a good summer project for sure.

Speaking of high end guys rumored to go to Hockey East schools, draft eligible forward Justin Carbonneau to BC seems to be likely. Blainsville-Boisbrand Armada player, probably 1st round pick, elite winger.

and the rich get richer.........

Forgot to do Cam MacDonald last night, will do it soon...

Cole Reschny, who was previously thought very likely to go BC, has committed to UND. Absolutely a steal, elite playmaker. There's a video of some of the draft prospects from the CHL doing superlatives on each other (best/worst style, most likely to be a coach, etc) and he was the runaway favorite for best playmaker. Schlossman notes that Victoria Royals' head coach, James Patrick, was a very good UND player.

Joins Malcolm Spence (who was the favorite for worst style in the video linked above... maybe he can learn some good style in college?) in announcing his commitment before the draft.

MAJOR UPDATE:

Frank Seravalli reporting that not only Cole Reschny, but absolute stud defenseman Keaton Verhoeff is also coming to UND this fall. Massive news. I knew Reschny was likely, but Verhoeff this early is absolutely huge. Verhoeff is projected 2nd overall in 2026, at the very least the top defensemen in that draft class.

Finals will be London vs. Medicine Hat, which seemed like the two strongest all season.

Moncton had a great season. Was nice seeing the owner, Robert Irving(of JD Irving, Irving Oil, etc…), fist bumping the players as they came off the ice to let them know he was proud of them. Not everyday you see a billionaire stand all game rinkside and get so involved as a genuine fan.

London Knights wins the semi-final 5-2. Feeling vindicated that I predicted correctly as well. Shots 37-23 in favor of London, power plays 0/1 London, 2/5 Moncton. London with the edge in faceoffs.

Moncton did well and pressed at times, but they were unable to score at even strength. London did their usual thing in the 3rd period where they step on the gas to take a lead and then smother you completely. Game winner came courtesy of future Badger Blake Montgomery on a rush with Sam Dickinson, who was briefly moonlighting as a center for that play.

Good news for Moncton is that Caleb Desnoyers finally looked like himself, scoring 1 goal and assisting on the other. Afterwards he confirmed what had been widely speculated- he was playing injured.

Austin Elliot (UML) 21 saves on 23 shots, both goals were Moncton power plays. Rousseau ends his spectacular junior career saving 32 of 36. Interested in seeing where he goes next.

Vidicek (Quinnipiac) went 11/27 on faceoffs. EVG didn't play a ton. Took a goaltender interference penalty (was definitely helped in but reportedly it did not take much of a push) and I barely heard his name the rest of the game. He took a bit of a beating after the goalie collision, wondering if it could've injured something, or they just didn't want to take the chance in such an important game.

Memorial Cup Final on Sunday June 1st, 7pm ET. First time in a decade the matchup will be WHL v OHL. In 2015, Oshawa beat Kelowna in OT, winner came from Anthony Cirelli, while Kelowna had Leon Draisaitl on their roster. Also, London is the 5th team to make the Memorial Cup Final in back-to-back years. Soo went 1-1, Kamloops went 2-0, Hull/Gatineau went 0-2, and Windsor went 2-0. Should be a hell of a game.

Can you add this latest UNH addition to your analysis?

Oscar Plandowski

Oscar Plandowski

two new USports transfers to UNH, both former QMJHL players. Both were not born in Nova Scotia but grew up in the area.

03 F Cam MacDonald transfers from Acadia University. 2021 5th round pick of TBL. Played one season in the USHL, considered a top 03 recruit, and was previously committed to Boston College. Decided to sign w Saint John Sea Dogs, where he played from 2020-2022, traded to Gatineau during the 22-23 season. Traded to Cape Breton Eagles for his overage season, where he played with incoming freshman Jacob Newcombe, often on the same line. Saint John won the Memorial Cup in 2022 as the hosts- interesting story here was that they had fired their head coach after the season (1st round exit) so just for the Mem Cup they hired Gardiner McDougall to coach just for the few weeks. Was nearly point per game with Acadia as a freshman, will likely be considered a sophomore. All-Rookie team USports, 2nd leading scorer. MacDonald was a young standout on a middling-to-bad team. Largely considered a responsible 200-foot player, good in face-offs, hard worker, strong on pucks. High IQ and processes the game quick.

03 RD Oscar Plandowski transfers from University of New Brunswick, 2021 5th round pick of DET, also went to Utah training camp on an invite. Played with Charlottetown Islanders from 2019-2022, played for Drummondville for half of 22-23 then traded to Moncton Wildcats, where he also played as an overage player. Teammates with Alex Carr in Charlotte, Carr went to Drummondville during the season before Plandowski did. Went to UNB last season, where they had a terrible season… by that I meant they lost 2 games instead of 0 and did not win the league, only conference champs. Was also on the All-Rookie team. Known for great skating, a 2-way defender.

Has a lot of family members in the hockey world, including current and former NCAA. His father is former Northern Michigan University forward Darryl Plandowski, played from 87-91, captaining them his final year. He’s been an amateur scout at the NHL level since 1998, currently with Arizona/Utah as Director of Amateur Scouting since 2020. His mom is a well-known skating coach. Oscar's younger brother, 05 F Jack, is a very prolific AJHL player, back to back champs with Calgary, lead the league in goals, assists, points this past season. Cousin Freddie Halyk was DU backup goalie the past 2 seasons and has recently transferred to Brown.

Both sound like prototypical solid college players, and both each crossed paths with two freshman commits in the QMJHL. I'm sure they were asked about the players, and there could be some chemistry to tap into, especially Newcombe and MacDonald spending most of the second half of the season on the same line (after Newcombe returned from chemo).

Commits joining CHL-

UConn 06 Brittan Alstead to Penticton from Des Moines.

New commits:

Few days late to this but 08 F Ty Meunier of Prince Albert Raiders to Omaha after junior eligibility ends. Two of his older teammates are already committed there

John Buccigross is being cryptic and suggesting Gavin McKenna to Michigan State. Penn State also posted the eye emoji tweet again 👀👀, which last time preceded the Luke Misa announcement. Buccigross then fed into it with some of his own eye emojis. Wonder if his teammate Jack Ivankovic committing officially is also a sign that Martone's announcement is coming soon.

Also, an update on Niagara being force fed competence by the league commissioner. New GM will be Windsor Spitfires Director of Scouting and Hockey Ops Frank Evola. If only the USHL could do something like this with Omaha...
