NCAA first-round predictions, March 13
(8) Clarkson v (10) BU (at Wisconsin)
(6) UMD v (11) Sacred Heart (at Cornell)
(7) Penn State v (9) St. Lawrence (at OSU)

What is with all the BU hate? Their school colors are sweet. This is a best uniform poll, right?
Any UMD uniform with a bulldog on it gets my vote for best jersey, haha.

As for BU, if they do win, it will be red on red... You may have to switch up some chants!

Not mascots?
Every game when Bucky Badger comes out on to the ice, the arena announcer says "the best mascot in the WCHA..." etc.

A couple weeks ago, a friend of mine who comes to the games fairly regularly asked how many WCHA teams even have mascots. There's Bucky, there's Goldie, there's the Ohio State Buckeye guy (but I don't know I've ever seen him at a game there0, and .... that's it?

Not much of a competition, is it. LOL

Yeah I can't remember how we chanted color-wise when bu was at LaBahn with Poulin for the ncaa's. UW shut her down.

BU, like a number of Big Ten schools, is Scarlet and White. Other schools are Crimson.

Other than Stanford and Louisville, I'm not aware of any other "cardinal" schools (and the Stanford shade is VERY different from Wisconsin's.)

The same eight teams as last year will be in the quarterfinals of the NCAA, and I think they're also the same teams as in the past two ECAC and WCHA semifinals! A small upset, in Pairwise terms, of SLU over Penn State 4-1.

I've seen Bucky Beaver at games, but IIRC, it was back in the day when they played at John Glass, not in the Sanford Center. Similarly with Champ at UMD games, who would show up for big games in their heyday. That Maroon Loon thing was likely there in Duluth a time or two, as well, not sure. I think I've seen both the SCSU husky and the Mavericks cow, but neither is particularly memorable, so it could have just been on TV for men's games, and I wouldn't remember any differently. Was Brutus there for Ohio State's Frozen Four appearance? Can't remember.

The reason we don't remember is that both Bucky and Goldy have very serious mascots. They have routines that they go through, and make attempts at improv. There are reasons why they're in attendance. A lot of other mascots seem to be grabbing someone from the general student population and saying, "Put this costume on." They don't do much beyond a wave or two to fans.

We start with four ECAC vs WCHA quarters, and we could conceivably see ECAC vs WCHA in all seven games from here on out. Or we could get an all ECAC or all WCHA Frozen Four. I like that this tournament will give us a better measuring stick than usual regarding how the two leagues stack up against each other, at least at the top.
