2026 Elections: To the Midterms and Beyond!

The emergency meeting is still going on, but a source leaked that once Platner drops out MDP will call a convention to pick a nominee. There would be 600 people at this convention. Details are not known yet.

Caveat that none of this has been confirmed.
All moot anyway. Zero chance whoever is picked beats Collin’s.

Jackson is the only candidate with a chance. I like David Costello (and he'll be back again) but he has no money and no name recognition.
Chellie Pingree might have a chance if she ran but I can't see why she would.
Shenna will probably back Jackson.
Jordan Wood might get in.
I've heard rumblings about Jared Golden (please, no)
I even saw Patrick Dempsey's name tossed around, but uh, no.
Dr. Shah could try I suppose.
A few people suggested me. I assume they were kidding. Or drunk.

What's the highest elective office you've held?

If you win I am available as a consultant. At the standard rate.

Let's get you all the way to the White House.
My career as an elected official died days after birth. I got on the ballot for school board and two days later received a cancer diagnosis and dropped out. But my name was still on the ballot and, despite not campaigning, I almost won. But I'm more of a Josh Lyman than a Jed Bartlet. I'm the consultant not the candidate. Perfect 4-0 on issues, 14-9 with candidates.

Only problem with the cartoon is the Elephant in all the News Round Tables I've seen doesn't say "but" and then change the subject. They just ignore it and go right back onto Platner.

In:
Troy Jackson
Dan Kleban
Nirav Shah
Jordan Wood

Filed paperwork:
Paige Loud

Publicly expressed interest:
Shenna Bellows
David Costello
Valli Geiger
Andrea LaFlamme

Potential:
Ryan Fecteau
Aaron Frey
Sara Gideon
Janet Mills
Chellie Pingree

Declined:
Joe Baldacci
Mattie Daughtry
Patrick Dempsey
Jared Golden
Heather Cox Richardson

To get nominated, a person needs to file the paperwork and get 200 signatures from registered Democrats. It will then go to a convention where a final candidate will be chosen. Details are not available yet. I'm hoping to be a delegate but we'll see how open the process is.

UPDATE FROM BEN CHIN: "...yesterday, the Maine Democratic Party said that our movement will 'have no role in determining our next Democratic nominee for U.S. Senate, nor in determining what this process looks like.' Instead, under their watch and direction, they allowed the DC-based Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee to send staffers to plan a potential nominating process behind closed doors. Both the state and national parties cut our team, our volunteers, and our vast networks of supporters out of the conversation completely."

Good job allowing Chuck Schumers team in to make sure Collins wins

I'm not taking anything anyone says at face value right now. Time will tell us if this is fair and democratic or if this was orchestrated by the DNC. I'm disinclined to believe that this was led by the people in DC because this is far too competent. But then I remember...

Why would repubs do this right now? Wait until a month before election and then do it. Someone wanted Dems to have a new candidate?

TPTB are trying to topple El Sayed's candidacy now with quotes from a 2022 discrimination lawsuit against one of his former employers back in 2015, in which he supposedly made ageist remarks to an older staff member.

I have thrown my name in the ring to be a delegate. My county will get 16 (out of 600). County chairs are going to meet tonight to determine how delegates will be chosen. The convention is slated for 25 or 26 July in Bangor, but that is subject to change.
Awesome. I hope you get chosen.

A little more about the convention:
There will be about 600 delegates. Each state committee member will be a delegate. There will be 500 delegates, chosen by county based on previous election results. I haven't seen the numbers this time, but it is usually based on the number of votes the Democratic candidate for governor received in the most recent election (in this case Janet Mills in 2022). That determines how many. So we have 16 (3.2%) and other counties will vary based on population and Dem performance. The bulk will come from Cumberland and Penobscot Counties. The key will be how counties select the delegates. We'll know if the process is legit or not when delegates are named.

As I finish typing this, Shenna Bellows has announced that she will be a candidate as well.
