The Countries: Forget it, Burkina Faso, Michigan is still the worst.

Have y'all heard? Canada is set to ban quoting the Bible in public!

Specifically, Bill C-9 would remove Section 319(3)(b) of Canada’s Criminal Code. This section allegedly protects the good-faith expression of a person’s religious views based on religious texts such as the Bible.

The bill also bans public displays of the swastika and other Nazi symbols used with hateful intent.

Conservatives are really triggered, for some reason...

The businesses of Makerfield have made out well. Over 3,000 Labour campaigners have filled the hotels and restaurants solid. Between them, the Reform campaigners and the steady flow of hundreds of members of parliament coming to town, it is estimated every door in the towns has been knocked seven times during the by-election.

We should have results in a few hours.

There are four candidates on the ballot: Burnham for Labour, Kenyon for Reform, Rebecca Shepherd for Restore and...

Howling Laud Hope, born Alan Hope, has been leader of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party since the death of its founder Screaming Lord Sutch in 1999. The Loonies have contested parliamentary by-elections since the early 1980s as a form of political satire.

Hope is a publican and was formerly the deputy mayor of Fleet in Hampshire. He has stood in more than thirty by-elections.

Turnout was 60%, best for a by-election since Labour took a safe Tory seat in the wake of Brexit in 2019.

First results are expected at 4AM local time with official results scheduled to be announced at 10AM.

Burnham wins.
Andy Burnham (Labour) - 24,927

Rob Kenyon (Reform) - 15,696

Rebecca Shepherd (Restore) - 3,111

Burnham warns Labour in his acceptance speech: "this is a final chance to change... there will be no second chance."

"Everyone knows that politics isn't working, everyone can feel that the country isn't where it should be," he says.

"Tonight could, just could, be the turning point," he adds.

Difficult to envision a future where he isn't the next PM. I suppose Starmer could step down, point to Streeting and say that he is the only chance to stop the Progressives/Communists/Marxists/Anti-Semites etc; and maybe he has purged/driven away the left from Labour so much that what remains will fall for it. If so, prepare for PM Nigel Farage in 2029. If you want a preview, check out V for Vendetta or certain sections of Pink Floyd's The Wall.... Follow the worm, indeed...

Reports are that Starmer will resign tomorrow. It remains to be seen if it is with immediate effect or if he's going to schedule his departure for after the summer. If it's immediate, that opens the door for Burnham to swoop in and take the job with all the momentum behind him. Streeting may see the writing on the wall and not oppose him. If Starmer waits that gives the momentum time to wane and other candidates like Streeting to build a campaign.
