Maine Black Bears 2026 Offseason: Missing Out on Mistlebacher

The bulk of football revenue comes via those beat-downs most every year, seems to me.

I'd have to guess that every sport at Maine (aside from hockey) operates in loss-leader mode, but football is easily the most visible of the group. That counts for something,
Women's hoops occasionally turns a profit AND makes appearances in the NCAA tournament.

The football team does very much not.

I hate to keep the convo on this subject, but I've been thinking about it way more than I should be.

Other schools are capable of maintaining a good hockey program AND an FCS football team. Perhaps all the negativity directed at Football should be re-directed at administration? When I was at Maine, hockey was still elite and football was highly competitive. It can be (and has been) done.

At the end of the day (saying this as an ardent college hockey fan), more people in the big picture care about football than hockey. That's reality. Outside of the college hockey bubble we are in on these boards, even in-state, Maine being the only D1 football program in state is a big deal to a lot of people.

If it's such a big deal where are the crowds? 4000 is a joke for D1 football

I might have to do some research, but I'm not sure 4000 is a joke for FCS football. I could be totally wrong though.

*according to a quick internet search, only 57 teams in FCS averaged more than 5000 people per game in home attendance.

For being the only D1 Football team in the state it is. Should be full every game

For comparison's sake, Rhode Island won the CAA championship and an NCAA playoff game. They're also the only D1 football team in their state. Population numbers similar. They averaged 5200 per home game this past season.

Look, I'm not trying to argue with you. I just think reading a bunch of people hollering into the void about something that isn't going to happen, and probably isn't the real problem, is silly. I follow Maine hockey closely, and Maine football casually. But I'm also objective. Maine football has been around since 1892 and is generally considered a solid program with a winning record all-time. Maine hockey started in 1977 and caught lightning in a bottle from the late 80s to the late 2000s. We all hope that the program can return to that level, but placing blame on football and crying for the program to be cut is foolish.

Can we at least wait until these facilities (Morse Arena with its football operations) and new turf, video boards and other stadium upgrades are finished before we tear this program down anymore. Maine is in the midst of a huge athletics campus upgrade and football is here to stay. Any real UMaine fan would not keep beating the drum to tear down one program in order to pump another one up. We don't need to love every sport but we should be rooting for all Black Bear teams that wear a MAINE uniform.

Based on the same Extra Points data from a couple pages ago it looks like the football numbers are as follows:

2024:
Expenses: $5.5M
Revenue: $6.1M

2025:
Expenses: $5.8M
Revenue: $6.9M

So... maybe football is more profitable than we thought?

You can't cut it without adding another Men's sport. Hockey should be the priority when it comes to funding though. Only team that could win another National Championship

They are not the only D1 football team in RI. Brown and Bryant are also have D1 football
