UNH Hockey Off Season Thread 2026

Seems a weird change for a player that seemed to be coming on for UNH down the stretch. It is hard to look good on a bad team and still he seemed to be winning on the wall and getting the puck to the net. It's not like he didn't have playing time. Pushed? Writing on the wall?
This departure is all about role. While I don't think Robert Morris is the hotbed of hockey if he was promised something and a coach follows through it could be better in the long run for the player.

I wonder if this means Souza looks to get one more?

Or perhaps the situation arose where Souza picked up more guys than initially anticipated, and he had a tough conversation with Walsh that he likely wasnt going to get much playing time, or any at all.

I wish him all the best. He is a bigger forward at 6’4”. I could see an AHA team taking a flyer on him, or perhaps a move down to DIII.
Go home to Andover and play at Plymouth State...

EDIT: Oops, I see Norbert had the inside on this. Good get for coach Russell.

Will have to go up and watch him play! Nice little arena and they have had a winning tradition. Ive mentioned the time I went to a game and saw Peter Laviolette on the ice...
My first couple of years at Plymouth were when Laviolette played. Was a force in front of the net and helped lead the team to relevance as a tournament qualifier for D3. He's still kicking around the ECHL, think he's one of the few Plymouth grads that "went pro." Oh yeah... and his dad taking time to come view primetime matchups against.... D3 Salem State

Pretty cool! I was like..is this player related to then coachof the Rangers? (If I have that right) lol of course he was. Reminds me of the times I saw former DRW coach Mike Babcock at Merrimack games..

Final NHL Central scouting has Nico Tournas as the 72nd rated North American skater and Roberto Henriqez is the 34th rated goalie. We still have recruits playing in the OHL and QMJHL. Henriqez and Romeo's teams have been eliminated in the USHL playoffs.

Seems like a near lock that Tournas will get drafted this year. Henriquez I assume will likely be a fringe/near miss draft pick, as isn’t there roughly 25ish goalies taken each year? Perhaps if one team really likes him he could go in the 6th-7th round.

The draft will be the next thing to look forward to after the portal closes on the 27th. That, and any potential word on AD Rich as the spring seasons start to finish up…

Cross off Henriquez. Greg Brown flipped him.

Ouch… that one stings. Henriquez must have really taken offense to not joining UNH this fall and the two goalie pickups in the portal. Souza really is going all in this year and is putting his bet on Simpson (with 1 year eligibility left) and Kendrick. If things crash and burn with those two this year, the loss of Henriquez may not be his problem anymore…

My guess is now Grout will now join in fall 2027, and hopefully he has a much better year in 2026-2027 compared to this past season.

I hope this one doesn't come back to bite us in the butt… his stats in the USHL were really good, and others have spoken how those numbers may translate well to college hockey. I wish him all the best nonetheless, just not when he plays us!

Kind of puts a damper on the good stuff this past week. Yep it's brutal out there. Still...saw alot of potential there. Best to him!

At the same time, it appears others have seen the major gains UNH has made thus far in the portal. MM tweeted UNH is tied with NoDak at 6th with +72.1 for biggest winners in the portal (according to CHIP score). We are up there with some pretty big names. Our score is the highest of any HE schools, and it’s mostly just BIG10 schools above us.

I looked into how this score is calculated, and it seems to be akin to WAR (wins above replacement) in baseball. CHIP stands for College Hockey Individual Point Value, and takes into account players
1.) time on ice
2.) shot location data
3.) strength of schedule

There are a number of other metrics/subjectivity that also go into assigning a players score.

Let’s hope it pans out this way when the games get started in October.

More concerned about our games in January through March. MS7 needs to win more of those games to win his next big contract extension.
