Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

I know we are still building towards next week, and not that Im surprised, but there are a ton of Big10 kids signing. I know everyone reloads, though Ped St and MSU have had quite a few flies drop.

Notre Dame looks like they are in a rough spot next year, again. I don't see any way Hage and Hughes dont leave the Weasels.

I don't really see WI losing much except for Srs, and I know Finners could depart, but I dont think the case is as strong there. Hensler will be there next year.

The Badgers are back, which is a good thing for Whioux fans who have, themselves, been wandering in the wilderness for too long.

Could Palodichuk possibly leave if he’s offered an ELC from a team/situation he likes? Supposedly had an offer last year, and he’s played better this year.

Depending on if he leaves, there will be 1-2 D spots to fill for next year from portal/chl. Hopefully making the frozen four and the press from that can put badgers on the radar for top targets committing this summer.

I dunno. Sometimes I question a lot of these guys leaving early just to run and founder in a 2nd or 3rd line in the ECHL. I don't think it is wortb it. Hone your craft with the best. Then own the AHL and be in the NHL within 2-3 yrs.

It will be interesting to see how this continues to evolve with NIL. The paycheck in the AHL and ECHL isnt that big, so if you have a good NIL set up, you may financially be better off staying. I agree that its odd to see guys leave early to tool around to be in the minors, but I also know for a fact that it is not always about making the NHL in a few years.

Mainly academic eligibility and a financial situation are the two other drivers, the latter more typically. I know for a fact a couple of people in the past for Bucky have left early because they werent going to be academically eligible. The goalie leave from Pedo St seems to be that. His numbers werent good enough or stable enough to suggest he has a quick track to the show in 3-5 years. He is more likely to tool around the minors and maybe get a shot somewhere along the way when the right set of departures from FA and injuries happen. The fact that we expected Augustine to leave but also there was a reasonable case to make for him to stay for his 4th year and dominate and be that much more ready to step in screams this isnt Ottawa seeing that guy as their future.

Agreed that NIL is a game changer for financially being able to keep guys that may be tempted. I cant believe any NHL team would be upset about a 3-7 rnd draft pick staying all 4 yrs with those facilities/resources in place at WI, esp after that Spittin Chics episode.

ECHL just went through a strike...their players dont get paid THAT much, and new agreement is for 5yrs. No way those ECHL teams hav resources top NCAA teams have.

I think Augustine proved all he needed to at NCAA level. Very similar to Sencer Knight for BC. He is going to the NHL.

What Bucky needs to do is commit NIL to the hockey team. My opinion is if the football team can toil along at 8-4, 9-3, keep the stands 90% full, that's good enough and should create opportunities for the hockey team.

Keep dreaming if you think resources will be diverted to hockey. Especially with our current AD. Gard can't even get mid Big10 money for the bouncy ball team. I am pretty negative about NIL prospects for hockey, unless an alumni / alumni group steps up specifically for that team.

Just saw from Mark Divver on twitter that JJ Wiebusch is transferring from Penn State.

1) Penn State now will be losing 5 of their top 6 scorers, will be an uphill battle to replace that production.

2) I'm definitely daydreaming a bit, but he would be an awesome portal pickup, although there would need to be some other changes to make space on the roster I believe. Wiebusch is from Verona so maybe there would be some interest in playing here in Madison, otherwise I don't think the Badgers would be a contender at all.

That's where system hockey that Hastings teaches should hopefully prevent that type of loss year to year when you don't have a NIL funder that can buy the best portal transfers. At least that's my hope!

I'm not saying hockey will be dipping its toes in the McKenna type NIL stuff...ever. i don't know that Id want it to. The best thing WI has going for it from a hockey perspective is all the resources are already there. No one entering the portal will be departing bc of a lack of resources.

Wiebusch also out at PSU and in the portal. I don't expect him to sign with Wisconsin, but he clearly saw the writing on the wall at PSU. That's a lot of points leaving, 69 through sophomore year.
