Wisconsin Hockey 25-26 Hastings Year 3 - Turning the Corner?

Oliver appears to be one 3 of the 3 serious contenders for the St. Cloud job. Apparently the new coach as to keep the old assistants because their contracts auto renew and they are too cheap to buy them out. Hopefully this is enough to keep Oliver here, but have Pavs contract ready to sign in the event he does leave.
 
Man…listening to Coach Hastings this past week has been pretty great.

Mea Culpa, I was wrong to get down on him earlier this season. In hindsight, I believe the injuries to Morrissey and especially Zelenov were the biggest contributors to the losing streak followed by the d-core injuries which took time to adjust for with Knox and Phelan stepping up who have really grown since. And Hauser’s injury.

I don’t know how many coaches have taken two teams to the frozen four…Lucia for sure with CC and MN…but that puts a coach in rarefied air.

I very much appreciate this post. It drove me nuts that some fans were dumping the team during the streak. I will say that when guys get injured in the collegiate ranks, you do hope for a young guy who hasn't had opportunity to play much to be a revelation. That being said, if they were a revelation waiting to happen, then coaches would be playing them ahead of other players. It did take time, but Phelan especially became dependable. Last year I practically wanted him cut.

Speaking of the injured, I do not want Schulz to play. The last thing UW needs is a mistake or 2 from a guy who does not have his seas legs yet. Don't mess with the chemistry.

Thinking about Hauser's size, he's listed as 5-11. Denver's starting goalie Hicks is listed at 5-10. UM's goalie is 5-11. The Sue's goalie is 6-3. Interesting.

I’m with you on that. Schulz is a great d-man but to put him in now, or at least to give him his prior minutes back might not be smart considering Knox and Phelan are improving and are playing at game speed. It will take time for Schulz to get up to that speed I think.

I still don’t like the way Hauser seems to duck and he’s prone to give up goals over his shoulders but he also made some saves that he probably shouldn’t have vs MSU which is what guys like Daubenspeck and Derksen used to do.

I’m optimistic about Thursday. If the guys play their game they’ve got a good shot to move on. But…I don’t want to discount Nodak because they appear to be every bit as good as Denver right now.

If Wisconsin doesn’t win the title I would prefer Nodak, then DU. If Michigan wins I’ll vomit.

Interesting that 3 of the 4 goalies are sub 6 foot. I like that trend, cause you dont have to be over six feet to be good at goalie, and also, what ive found at the younger ages is the tall kids tend to rely too much on being tall to get them through and unfortunately, too many coaches/evaluators see how many pucks they stop by virtue of being a larger human and think the kid is better. Enough of those kids get put on a team they dont belong and get absolutely destroyed, cause tall does not equal skill.

Also, ive found more than a few tall kids be lazy/screw around cause they think that they dont have to work hard, they are tall.

The Denver goalie is good, but will his heater continue since he joined the team? At somepoint it has to break, might as well be next weekend.

There really wasnt one. My understanding is it went off a Sparty player's glove to be specific, and also a multi Sparty player screen on Augustine. That goal was one he saves basically 100% of the time if he sees it and/or not deflected. Augustine will be the starter somewhere in the next 5 or 6 seasons, Im assuming Detroit, which means they have a lot of future dead weight goalies they can offload for trades. Maybe send them all to Edmonton so they can ruin a few more pro goalies, lol.
 
Yesterday Channel 4 out of Milwaukee did a really nice piece on the UW hockey team and it wasn't buried in the sports part either; it was before the weather. It helps their new sports director was in Madison prior to her arriving in Milwaukee. ESPN WI's Wilde & Tausch had Dexi on this am. I did not like how Tausch framed UW's getting into the FF was very improbable. They had a lot of quality wins and were in the top 3 of the rankings for weeks.

They frame it that way bc the only thing people see, remember, or are told about is the 6 game losing streak. It amazes me how few of the pundits even mention how they were decimated by injuries on both the blue line and centerline during the year.

I dont think Augustine was even planning on doing anything with that puck except watch it go over his head and hit the boards. It was Shoudy for MSU that reached his hand up to try and catch it and it deflected down.

At the same time another MSU player skated right in front of Augustine, blocking his view. When Augustine reacted he had no idea where the puck was.

Finley was the closest to the goal but nowhere near causing an issue for Augustine. So basically 2 MSU players caused the chaos all by themselves that let that one in.

I respect MSU, Augustinne and theiri coach...but Im happy as hell that puck went in!

Im also happy the puck went in. And you are probably right. Ill be honest, I was so excited to see it hit the back of the net, I didnt really scrutinize the fine details on initial trajectory, all that mattered is it wind up hitting twine.

So if Augustine is anything like my kid, he heard it on its way and also heard it hit something, so even if he couldnt see it he knew he needed to try to get in the way of it. The part that makes it hard is there is a lot of net that you have to cover and if you dont know where its coming to, its a blind guess. Happy he guessed wrong.

He will do well in Detroit, and likely will help them to make a cup run down the line. I will be surprised to not see him getting the bulk of the minutes there in 5 or so seasons, maybe less.
