UMaine 25-26: Marques My Word: Back to the Big Time

2600 seat arena.. dont know why anyone would build such a small arena these days, when other schools are building 10 or 15 thousand seat arenas
Seems small to me also. I would assume they think they can get better players with a new facility. If so more people will go to games? When Blodgett was here they used to fill Alfond. I would have thought around 4 thousand would be more like it.

What is going on at Maine that two different players leave early for minor league deals?
Haven't seen a contract in forever, but is the "go back to school" clause still in every pro contract? When JY signed with the Rangers his contract called for a $20,000 bonus for going back and getting his degree. My understanding is that the NHLPA mandated that bonus for any player who left college early. I'd leave early every day of the week and twice on Sunday. Most of us get a massive bill with a crushing interest rate; they get a check.

It's not unexpected that a couple guys would sign pro deals.

I'd be more worried about a potential issue if some players we aren't expecting to leave end up hitting the portal.
I think it's quite unexpected for players to sign a non-NHL level deal before their eligibility is up. I don't know the exact numbers, but my guess is that a college player has left early for only an AHL deal less than 10 times in the last 5 years. Maine now has two in the same offseason

Their contract wouldn't fall under the NHLPA since it's not an NHL deal

Size and speed of ND just killing QU, who is on the smaller side.
The west teams dominated.

See if nd falls asleep and lets qu back in the game

Sorry, it may sound harsh, but you have no idea what you are talking about. Many kids over the years have left early for the pros at the AHL level. These guys are not 19, they are 23 and 24! There dream is to put on an NHL sweater. Have been watching Maine hockey since 1980, these are expected departures. The one departure that did not happen last year that was a surprise was Boija, and now he'll need to come back and reestablish himself, as he lost quite a bit of money by not signing last year. They are at Maine to play pro hockey, period!

If any of your points about players leaving early for the AHL being completely normal were true, it would apply to the entire country, not just Maine. By my count there's not a single underclassman from the other 62 teams in the country that has signed a full AHL contract since the season ended.

doesn't look it, ND up 5. Love to see ND in the frozen four. Their fans are a hoot. I still remember the Walsh jerseys so I'm an ND fan in Vegas
During the Icebreaker in Portland, Brad Berry talked about getting stopped by Maine fans who would repeat that story to him and thank him. "I wasn't even the coach then," he smiled. But you're part of the legacy and Maine fans don't forget.
