safe travels to all going to The Cooler....I will say I was there in the fall to watch my daughter play WS in Volleyball, very nice facility they had.....
Announcer (not Baker) said the Oswego fans in the building outnumbered the locals by around a 2 to 1 margin. Is that for real???Hobart beats the Lakers 4-0 to take their first SUNYAC title. Oswego came to play but Hobart Defense and Beaver were awesome. Now we take a well deserved rest and wait to see who our next opponent is in the NCAAs.
This is no different a disposition than when I visited Geneva for Oswego vs Hobart games from over a decade ago. This is not a long drive for Lakers faithful, and even 3x D3 championship legacy in, if the Statesmen "faithful" were even a fraction dialed in, that barn should have been sold out for all purple and creamsicle. I want our boys to show so badly. What makes Hobart so beautiful?!? I have fuc*ing cousins that attended there: in the past, the Statesmen were a foil to Oz, not an Empire with a Death Star. This is nuts.Cooler was absolutely rocking with the laker faithful. Looked to be a 50/50 splits from my very biased (and terrible pov I really couldnt see past the middle bleacher) but when the doors opened at 5:30 the lobby was 95% oswego fans though. maybe we got all the good seating on the bleachers and all the hobart fans got stuck standing on the ends? Either way we were absolutely more loud and proud the entire game even when losing. Not going to lie unless a goal was scored the cooler was QUIET from the hobart fans. You could honestly argue it wasnt even a home game for the statesmen.
It certainly was a majority of Oswego fans who arrived early and filled the stands across from the Laker bench and beyond. I got there at 6pm which was the advertised opening only to find 75 % of the stands already full . HWS students typically arrive close to game time did not adjust their routine and had to stand behind the goals like sardines sprinkled with some standing Laker fans. The only fans that got a chance at an early sale were 150 Oswego fans that were released to them online. Kudos to Oswego for supporting their team and getting seated early . The SOG were even through two periods, which has not happened to Hobart all season. The turning point was Hobart smothering the Oswego attack while a man down for 5 minutes following an interference penalty. It was a great test for Hobart Hockey prior to the NCAA tournament.Announcer (not Baker) said the Oswego fans in the building outnumbered the locals by around a 2 to 1 margin. Is that for real???
Rings, banners, and rosters can always be bought especially in this new age of college sports. Tradition and passion cannot. The NIL rule changed 7/1/2021 too late to affect the 21-22 season but it's certainly not a coincidence that hobarts 1st recruiting class that they can spend unlimited money on now has 3 rings with an opportunity for a 4th one. Not to disparage mark Taylor too much though he did turn a bad program into one of the better ones in d3 over the course of 25 years, and one of the best coaches in all of d3. But coaches usually don't change their culture 22 years into the job and suddenly go from a tournament team to arguably the greatest dynasty. This is no different a disposition than when I visited Geneva for Oswego vs Hobart games from over a decade ago. Sour grapes post, implying Hobart Hockey has bought the team. For what gain? Because we make so much money from the $5 dollars for every patron (800 capacity), because we use a municipal rink that D3 hockey visitors mock, or maybe because we have no local NIL deals like a Utica star player has with a car dealership......no ,we have none of those. I've heard we get some equipment from "Donors Day" where Hockey raised less than 10% of the entire amount for all sports. The players come here for the team that has been building over the last 10 years that is led by the best coach in D3 hockey and recruits talented players that "fit" the program based on hardwork and team play. They also come because of the alumni network that lends support for internships and careers post graduation. I am an alum that didn't play hockey, but this team plays for each other even if Oswego fans show up early and outnumber the Hobart fans I give Oswego full credit for building the kind of culture where the fans are passionate as well as the players and travel 90 minutes for an away game. Our lacrosse alums have that kind of historical culture. I agree that the current sports NIL environment is insane and has the potential to be manipulated even at the D3 level. But, diluting what this team has accomplished during this streak and attributing it to some phantom financial support that has put the program at an unfair advantage, is just wrong.Rings, banners, and rosters can always be bought especially in this new age of college sports. It's not wrong. Players mostly come for financial reasons: $18,000 for the first year and then $6,000 for each of the next three years. Who wouldn't go for $36,000 over 4 years? Parents and players don't care about facilities. Every school has an alumni network; that's a mute point. Coach Taylor just didn't wake up and become a better coach; the school opened up its wallets and are paying for better players that other schools can't match with financial aid packages. Bill Beaney/Middlebury and Mike McShane/Norwich didn't stop being good coaches. When the money ran out and academic requirements changed, it effected recruiting and set the programs back. They stopped getting the best players. New Administrations are realizing now there has to be a balance. SUNYAC schools can't compete with private schools with competitive financial aid packages despite what fans think. It costs hockey players $4,000 to attend WNEC. It won't be long before they are attracting better players, of course Heenan will eventually steal them of their roster (Kuznetsov), give them housing in one of his apartment building, and eventually sign an NIL deal with a local car dealership.Sour grapes post, implying Hobart Hockey has bought the team. I would say some sour grapes some reality, in what day and age we live in in college sports, lets just say its a coincidence about the dates and Hobart taking over d3 hockey after being a also ran for much of its existence, but hey ya gotta give it to Bart, they did what they had to do, and its working.....Go Bart, best of luck....Sour grapes post, implying Hobart Hockey has bought the team. well look at Barts top scorer, he did not just happened to transfer to Bart by accident,I wold guess he got a pretty good package, like some other schools are able to give,The U comes to mind, but hey, they did what they have to do to win.....It's not wrong. You do know Hobart made the NCAA championship weekend and even won ECAC West titles a few times before this dynasty? This was not a sudden turnaround after 22 years.Rings, banners, and rosters can always be bought especially in this new age of college sports. Tradition and passion cannot. I am well aware which I why I gave Taylor his props earlier. But there is a large difference between winning a few conference titles with some tournament runs and then suddenly ur the greatest team ever the minute players can start earning more money. You do know Hobart made the NCAA championship weekend and even won ECAC West titles a few times before this dynasty? True. My point is you implied a "winning culture" didn't exist until after 22 years. That culture clearly existed for a long time.I am well aware which I why I gave Taylor his props earlier. Ah yes, great post, Donald R. DeCicco('75) was a real student(I actually knew Donnie) , he was a third string goalie on the Hockey Club. .........really.He received a great tuition package not because he was a good hockey player, but because he was geographically desirable for the Foreign Students Union , as Brockton, Massachusetts was considered a foreign country. Donnie became a Hollywood script writer and no longer skates, but is paying it forward by contributing to the secret Hobart Hockey NIL fund that is used for current "alien" recruits. Most successful programs have had the existence of a winning culture cultivated over time that includes academic achievement, community involvement, and athletic success. Hobarts recent success is based on nothing more than a financial investment in better players. Facilities, academics, and coaching staff have all remained the same. As long as they continue to invest in their players, everyone else is playing for second place.True. My point is you implied a "winning culture" didn't exist until after 22 years.
