RPI 2025–26: Off the Critical List and In Recovery

I assume others got this also in an enclosure to an E-mail from Coach Lang.

Thrawl Promoted to Assistant Coach

On December 8th, 2025, Liam Thrawl was promoted from Operations Coordinator to Assistant Coach. Thrawl joined the program as the Operations Coordinator in December 2023 and served in that role until his current promotion to Assistant Coach.

Finnegan Added as Operations Coordinator

On December 8th, 2025, Michael Finnegan was added as the new Operations Coordinator. Finnegan was previously the Director of Hockey Operations at American International College from 2018-2021 and again during the 2024-25 season. After his first stint at AIC, he served as the Men’s Hockey Video Coordinator at the University of Connecticut from 2021-2024. During his time at AIC, he was part of teams that won 3 Atlantic Hockey Regular Season Championships and 2 Atlantic Hockey Tournament Championships as well as the program’s first NCAA Tournament win against St. Cloud State University in 2019.

Question from a non-alum but long-time fan (and kid of two RPI grads, one of whom worked there for decades) --

Have seen the mentions of emails from the program and/or Coach Lang, the invite to the video call, etc. Any way to get on the mailing list for these things, or are they limited to alumni, hockey donors, something else? Would be great to see them!

Good question. There is a link to unsubscribe but not one to subscribe. The most recent one is from lange3@rpi.edu, You could write to him.

Our guys are actually going to play a game this Saturday. They'll be visiting Vermont at 6 PM.

UVM's 5-11, They have been particularly bad at home, where they are only 1-5. The Catamounts scored no more than two goals in any of their first 13 games, though they did score 3 in a 3-2 win at BU on Dec. 6 and 4 in a 4-5 home loss to Merrimack on Dec. 29.

The Engineers don't score a whole lot, either, but they've been better (not great, but better) on the road than at home. Seems like this could be a winnable game for RPI.

After reading the scores thread, I am not sorry that I missed the game.
We have struggled with offense all year, and it looks like that is not going to change.
The defense looks good, so we might get a few wins this half, but I don't expect anything great coming our way.
The system looks good, now we need some scoring talent. JMO

That pretty much sums it up for me. However, I really wasn't disappointed with Saturday's game as it played out pretty much as expected. We have trouble putting pucks in the net under the best of circumstances so after a month off I assumed that we'd struggle offensively. Although UVM is hardly an offensive powerhouse we played a pretty solid defensive game, giving up a fair number of shots but the majority were from the outside that Krawchuk handled easily. The game came down to a 3rd period opening cross-ice pass in the center zone that hit a UVM stick in the passing lane leading to a quick 3 on 2 into our end. I expect that defense will help us win a few games in the 2nd half, but the coming weekend against Princeton (which just swept Dartmouth and Harvard) and Q could be ugly. I'll probably be at Saturday's game because I can't help myself.

The teaser for today’s McMahon newsletter includes a reference to “rumblings that RPI is getting more support institutionally.” I’m not a paying subscriber so I don’t know anything more but if any here are perhaps they can give a brief summary.

Finally, a hockey game.
I will not tart the scores thread tonight, as I can't remember I started and we got a win.
See you tonight during the game.
Jenny and I have been to Baker Rink when RPI has been there very often (less so recently) but we have seen far more wins than losses and will attempt to be there tonight to lend our voices of support. We have seen Princeton this year and they are a very good team that comes out flying especially for home games. We will have to come out ready and focused or we could find ourselves playing from very far behind quickly. Go Red!!!

The newsletter basically talks about rumblings throughout college hockey that RPI hockey is getting support from the top. Nothing specific but the financial support seems to be there. Mike mentioned the rink renovation is a big deal. Year 1 of a rebuild but I believe this program will be very good in a couple years. We have the right coach and now we have full support from the top which McMahon mentioned is crucial for a rebuild. Exciting shit here
