There is a sweet spot on this issue, like abortion, and we'll never get there because it generates too much political anger, votes, and money.

Yes, yes indeedy. However, in the case of children there are a ton of other issues that need to handled with grace, and expertise. Instead they're being handled with hammers and pitchforks.

As with abortion, these issues should not be handled by the gubmint at all. Get out of the way and let the parent, minor, and doctor decide.

The one decent idea conservatives ever gave the world that was not 100% self-serving made up bullshit to cover their greed was the carving out of an individual's personal space where society has no business interfering. That was their only legitimate purpose for existing. Rousseau and the Left can be wrong when we say Mommy Knows Better. The state cannot "force you to be free," that is logically incoherent and we on the Left have never fully come to terms with that foundational weakness of one of our pillars. The Right, insofar as it has any raison d'être other than a tax dodge, is there to stand athwart and stop us from sacrificing the person to an authoritarian society.

This should be their shining moment, but instead the Right is exposed as just a fig leaf for the Misogynist Death Cult. So, don't compromise with that. Give it no oxygen at all. If the minor says no it's no. If the minor says yes and the parent says no then seek emancipation through the legal system. If the minor says yes and the parent says yes and every doctor they ask says oh fuck no at that age you're wrong on the science then find another doctor or probably better still listen to the science.

How is it up to the Cafe's resident dirty communist to remind that we Do Gooders can go too far? :cool:

It's one thing to quibble over sports leagues, particularly when nearly all the whiners (Riley, etc.) have acted in bad faith to try and score media attention and quick gigs as MAGA It Girl of the Moment for pay.

But generally speaking, these gender identity diagnoses and decisions about the various therapies and surgeries available are best left to doctor and patient, or patient's legal guardian(s) as the case may be. And that includes not harassing people in public restrooms and awkwardly filming your fishing expedition into the ladies' room like that dolt Nancy Mace.

Keep your mitts off a personal choice is a consistent and internally coherent moral and political position, and it reciprocally supports LGBTQ, abortion, birth control, assisted suicide, DNRs, parental rights, and the like.

Do that and let the Thumpers wail. If the electorate in an area is not with us on basic rights we have no business (mis)representing them in a democratic society anyway. Do not water down the message for the 80% by kowtowing to the 20%. Let them burn.

Reagan figured out how to make rural white Poors see the sociopath billionaires who fuck them as allies and hate the educated and empathic who try to help them. It's the greatest confidence trick in US history and that is a very, very high bar. But we have not learned the obvious lesson. Cut them loose.

There is a reason Marx distinguished between Workers and Peasants and called the latter "sacks of potatoes" who love authoritarian rule. If you offer your hand to a drowning peasant, he'll scream "YOU THINK YOU'RE BETTER 'N ME!" and pull both of you into the propeller of the yacht the Republican is casually piloting over him.

Help workers. They deserve it and will very quickly take the lead themselves. Stop trying to help peasants. They eternally soak up charity while radiating hatred. "Never attempt to teach a pig to sing."
