2025-26 Penn State Nittany Lions

RIT split with Mercyhurst 1-0, 1-0. RIT also has wins against St Lawrence and Colgate. PSU should not be looking past RIT to get to Northeastern.

I agree 100% - if anyone is going to play spoiler to Penn State this season, RIT looks as good for that as anyone else has so far. They may not be at a point to challenge for regular season or conference titles, but they sure could be the thorn in the side that Syracuse used to be for Penn State.
 
Thanks for posting the links. Roberts has really been on a heater lately and ended up as the player of the week. Janecke had an interview with Lavar Arrington the former Penn Stater who is big in broadcasting now. My takeaway is that she is intense and means what she says. In her first collegiate game she led PSU to a win over Wisconsin and has been great for the program.

Penn State beat RIT 5-3 in game one tonight in Rochester. Goals for Penn State came from Tessa Janecke, Maddy Christian (shorthanded), Leah Stecker, Abby Stonehouse, and Mya Vaslet got her first of the season (shorthanded). All three of RIT's goals were powerplay goals. Shots on goal were 47-20 for Penn State, and penalties were 5 for Penn State and 4 for RIT.
 
Good to see Vaslet get a goal and it looks like it is Stonehouse's turn to heat up a bit.

The Pickering Alvarez line for RIT needs a little extra attention tomorrow.
 
After one, Penn State and RIT are tied at 2-2. Goals for Penn State came from Danica Maynard and Tessa Janecke. Shots on goal are 14-5 for Penn State, and penalties are 2 for RIT and 1 for Penn State.

For some reason, Jeff Kampersal has freshman goalie Maddy Campbell in net today instead of Katie DeSa. I don't really understand that in a conference series that counts. She's looking like the starter next year after DeSa's graduation, but throw her in when the game doesn't matter, like the Cornell, Northeastern, or Ohio State matchups. But, as I say often, that's probably why I'm not a coach.
 
After two, it's tied 3-3 at RIT. Maddy Campbell was pulled after the first period, and Katie DeSa is in net. Shots on goal are 24-14 for Penn State, and penalties are 4-4. Second period stats show RIT really came alive, and they outshot Penn State 11-10 in the second. RIT has one of the best powerplays in the country, and Penn State needs to stop letting them show why.

That was way too close for comfort. RIT has great special teams this season, and Penn State took 11 penalties in the series that cost them four RIT powerplay goals. I didn't like Maddy Campbell starting in goal for game two of a conference series, but Kampersal corrected that after the first period. I wouldn't mind seeing Campbell play at Ohio State, since it won't affect conference standings. Penn State is already going to show up in Columbus on short notice anyway, just three days after playing Cornell, with a bus ride mixed in, too...call it a schedule-filler series, and let Campbell get peppered at Ohio State, so she gets some game time (if she's taking over as the starter next season).

Celeste Brown is doing good things at RIT, and you're right - they will be fighting for second place, and have a good chance of taking it, too.
 
It's hard to question Kampersal on goalies with the luck he has had when the starter goes down and the back up comes in and also does well. The regular conference title is in the bag. The conference tournament is never in the bag. These out of conference games against OSU, Cornell and Northeastern will determine if PSU can stay at their ranking or a little higher which would allow the program to take its next step. I think PSU will outshoot Cornell big-time but Bergmans the goalie is formidable. As far as Northeastern, PSU has split with them recently. OSU is never easy and will be a good barometer.
 
The ranking is in uncharted territory for the program. Janecke is taking the program along for the ride. Don't forget about the outdoor game which will be another first for the program. It almost seems like a no-brainer to make this a yearly thing. Playing in Beaver Stadium should entice prospective recruits.
 
Since the weather isn't cooperating for a quick motorcycle ride, and I'm a little stir crazy because of it, I went looking at NCAA national stats to see where Penn State is. Not looking too shabby so far:

#1 - Scoring Margin

#1 - Short-Handed Goals

Thanksgiving is over (hope you had a good one), so now it's back to some hockey. #4 Penn State is at #7 Northeastern this weekend for a top-10 showdown. It may not mean anything for conference standings, but this will be a good test for Penn State. Both games are afternoon games, and streaming on ESPN+.

ESPN+ has game two set for 3:00, but both teams have it at 2:00, so we'll go with 2:00.

Great information posted in your last two posts. Hope you had a nice Thanksgiving 🦃 also. I like to see Kampersal had the team in Boston practicing today. I think that helps the team. Northeastern's rink has seen better days, but you might as well get used to the ice.

And they’ve played the School for the Blind and The New York Home for Disabked Athletes as their toughest opponents thus far
 
After one, Northeastern is up 1-0. Penn State leads the shots on goal by 16-2, and penalties are 1 for Northeastern and none for Penn State. This one is living up to the hype - fast and furious, but Penn State is really controlling the play. The Northeastern scoring play was a 3-on-1 with 24 seconds left in the period, thanks to Penn State defender Grace Tullock...ugh. Otherwise, it's been a lot of Penn State offense.

Tessa Janecke took a 5-minute game misconduct (so I guess technically Penn State has 2 penalties), and on that delayed penalty Northeastern scored their third. They will start the third period with two more minutes left on the powerplay. Not looking good for Penn State, as hard as they're playing.
