Space Exploration II: Always Looking up

9 hours until Blue Origin's New Glenn launch of NASA's ESCAPADE mission to Mars.
That'd be cool if it were the American people who accomplished it. Instead it's just another multi-billionaire who'd rather do that with his money then actually support Democracy and regulated capitalism in his own country.

EscaPADE orbital injection was successful.

Meanwhile, in another part of the forest.

China has just lost two critical spy satellites despite their successful launch on 9 November. This comes on top of the recent loss of two other satellites and is a real blow for Beijing given the strategic importance of each individual satellite to the country's space intelligence capabilities

Bezos is a POS but that mission, unlike Musk's boondoggles, is great science.

Most people who conducted great explorations, let alone funded them, have been ahem "big personalities." We have to share this rock with apes for a while longer, and I'm not too particular which ape helps the humans develop the technology by which we will leave and strand them here.

Viewing location for New Glenn launch gets unexpected visitor at worst time.

All of these failures were paid by the US contracting SX for a lunar lander. Which, of course, they have not bought, and is the primary reason China will easily beat us to the moon. Thanks, elmo.
I can't believe I'm stuck rooting for Bezos in this billionaire pissing contest.

Holy fuck did the "traditional" aerospace companies drop the fucking ball.

I can guess having been inside one for 17 years.

But I wouldn't want to mansplain.

Plus we have somebody on the Forum who knows 10,000x more than I do. And he's less of a dick.

I’ve been inside 8 of them, totaling 31 years.

The heyday of the big primes was the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Then, (because of those heydays!), in 1984 they passed this little piece of legislation called the Federal Acquisition Regulations (FAR), which actually, legitimately did a lot to get rid of the ecxess profits and underhand dealings in federal contracts.

And now - poof - the primes don’t want to bid on big, complex, risky one-off projects (where you can’t make up for upfront losses on a long production run or juicy contracts to maintain the products in the field)

You can probably connect the dots from there.

Ok, that makes more sense - I already saw the official release from SpaceX saying no fuel was on board, so I was confused by the massive fireball that Kepler posted.

So many explosions, it’s hard to keep them all straight!
