Harvard Hockey 2025-'26: Crimson Ascending

Thought it was high time to create a new season thread. Good start to the season with the tie at UConn, especially considering what they did to us last year at Bright Landry. Congrats to Richard Gallant on his first collegiate goal. Hope it is a harbinger of many more to come!

The Freshman cohort seems promising, especially on defense. I'm also impressed with Heiki Ruohonen, a Freshman from Finland. who brings balance to the lineup. After winning the exhibition versus Northeastern (4-2) and playing UConn to a draw, the Crimson are off to a good start with a young talented team. Cornell will be an early test at Bright-Landry.

I'm not thrilled about playing Cornell this early in the season. Fortunately, we have another tune-up game against Stonehill tomorrow night at Bright Landry.

I had to pause and gather my thoughts about the Stonehill game until some time had passed. Mainly because after dominating the first period and going up 4-0 early in the second, Harvard decided to take a nap for the rest of the game. Getting outshot 19-4 in your own building by a non-conference D-2 school is about as embarrassing as it gets. The Crimson simply aren't good enough to take any team lightly, and boy, did it show on Tuesday.

The star of the game was Ben Charrette. He made some terrific stops while his teammates stood around and allowed Stonehill to do pretty much anything they wanted, whenever they wanted. Where was the physical play? How about taking the body once in a while? And whoever is coaching the D for Harvard needs a few lessons in D structure and how to clear the D zone effectively w/o consistently coughing up the puck.

Playing the way we did in the second period won't cut it against ECAC schools. We'll get our doors blown off. I hope Teddy has the good sense to drill them hard this week to get their attention. One of the most deceiving final scores you'll ever see in college hockey.

this is pretty normal for how this season has worked out league wide with few exceptions. teams of any caliber are getting their shit kicked by “d2 non conference teams” because the parity is so insane. some schools have been playing a bunch and still haven’t run into it. the ECAC especially has had an bad non conference record this season so far. Clarkson is the weirdest of all- lost to two AHA teams, two ranked wins to start a series, split with two CCHA teams. 3-5-0 record, but 2 of those wins over #3 and #8 in the country.

it’s better they get this lesson early- that you cannot take a single team lightly no matter how much lower you think they are. Stonehill nearly took the #3 ranked team in the nation to OT. Miami won 3 total games last season and they have a 7-1-0 record, getting their first loss on friday. on the same night of this game, Quinnipiac tied with Alaska, which is better than the last time they saw each other in the Ice Breaker and lost in regulation.

absolute insanity going on. what mattered was coming out with a win and learning from the experience. if they’re lucky, they won’t have a wacky loss to teach them this lesson.

Generally going to be a long night when your 1st line center goes 5 for 22 in the dot. Need a different face-off guy if that trend continues. Tough to win games when you don't possess the puck.

Very true. I don't think anyone saw QPac losing to Yale and tying Brown on a single weekend.

The weekend went pretty much as expected, although that shorthanded goal by Cornell was such a killer. If we tie the game there, who knows what happens in OT?

The Saturday game was bizarre. We jump out to a three-goal lead, let Colgate tie it, then pump three more goals past their goalie before hanging by a thread at the end. Either we are firing on all cylinders, or we fall asleep and let the other team dominate in our D zone. The only consistency from this season so far (and I know, it's early) is that we are wildly inconsistent.

There have been a ton of D-zone breakdowns that need to be cleaned up. Neither Colgate nor Cornell is offensively gifted, and yet we gave them way too many good looks at Charrette this weekend. Yes, we're young and inexperienced, and hopefully things change for the better as the season goes along. With Michigan coming into town over Thanksgiving break, let's hope it's sooner.

Also good to see Severo improve at the dot on Saturday relative to Friday. Harvard still remains quite deficient in this area which contributes to our defensive miscues. Been an issue for 3+ years now.

Good win for the boys last night up at Cheel. Always a tough place to play and come away with points. Especially as they were getting outshot in the third and yet managed to convert on two of five shots, the last with under a minute to go. We'll take it and move on to SLU.

While it's way to early to draw a conclusion, it is interesting to note that Harvard either scores in bunches (6 goals each against Stonehill and Colgate) or struggles to score (1 goal against UConn and Cornell, 2 last night).
