Lake State Lakers (2025-26)

It will be weird to see the Lakers without the anchor on the front of the jersey this season.

My first impression is that I'm not crazy about it. I don't care for the look. I'll wait to see what it actually looks like on a player in full uniform, both white and blue jerseys. Not very distinctive compared to the more traditional Laker anchor jerseys.

This ranks up there with New Coke. You have one of the most recognizable and respected sweaters in college hockey with the anchor, and you bench it for this?

It will be unreadable in game video too. Major fail.

Sweep of Stonehill on the road with freshman and Sault, Ontario native Calem Mangone getting 2 goals today and 3 over the weekend.

It's obvious to say, but boy it would be great for LSSU to have a Sault, Ontario kid as its star.
apparently Mangone and the other Sault, Ontario kid Adam Barone are childhood friends and youth hockey teammates. in the second game Barone assisted on both of his goals, coach mentioned theyre having fun reuniting. id guess Barone was part of the recruitment effort.

i think you guys are also inheriting a bunch of Saginaw Spirit fans, not only having two of their recent graduates but being in the same state (other Saginaw alum are at DU and UVM). lots of comments on team socials from spirit fans, even saw someone mentioning they're bringing a saginaw youth team to a game this month to see them. most CHL teams do a lot of community outreach, but hosting (and winning) the Mem Cup in 2024 boosted the attachment to that year's team.

That's great to hear and great for Lake State to get exposure in Saginaw. Hopefully that can translate to not just hockey, but also the university itself. The low enrollment always concerns me. Lake State needs that love throughout Michigan and Northern Ontario.

I know he just got an extension, but are the Lakers really content as a program to get swept by Lindenwood at home and give up 12 goals? I mean he hasn't been over .500 in any season since that NCAA tournament run. Is over .500 too much to ask for?

I didn't see either game, but they definitely laid an egg. I don't know whether it was poor defense, poor goal tending, or some of both. They scored 4 goals both games, so offense wasn't the problem.

I saw both games. Goaltending was not the problem. Defense was definitely lacking, not sure if it was not having Druskinis or something else. Friday night, Brown and Galloway were much better than Saturday. Barone seems to be more interested in offense, which is fine as long as he doesn't get caught up ice. Hoping C Milburn is back this week, Druskinis will be out for a couple weeks.

I will say that Lindenwood is also sneaky good. Last year they spooked Wisconsin with a win and OTL in their barn to start the season and it looked like the Badgers never recovered their composure for the rest of it. Lions also beat Omaha and Notre Dame, plus tied Augustana and an OTL v St Thomas, and just regularly made high-end teams work for their wins. Their new head coach has been a long-time assistant for Guy Gadowsky, known as a great recruiter, and their top 2 scorers this season are USports transfers. Not a perfect team by any means of course- that goaltending is a little spooky- but they have a lot of promise and have shown the ability to take it to very good teams in recent memory. Good measuring stick in terms of what to clean up and they sounded like really fun games.

It's also very clear that no matchup is a guarantee this season just based on how everyone else is doing. The top dog teams may be hyping up the new high-end CHL guys they got, but all teams are benefiting from the larger player pool. Miami won only 3 games all last season, and this year they've won all 4 of theirs. If Miami's sweeps of Ferris State and RPI aren't convincing, try all of Thursday night's games. #1 Western Michigan, #2 Michigan State, and #4 Penn State all lost to Ferris State, UNH, and Clarkson respectively. Even BU, who just jumped up to #1 today, could only tie with Colgate on Sunday. No nights off for anyone at any time. This is turning out to be a very fun season of college hockey already.
