Maine Recruits: When Ashes Fall, Legends Rise

You can watch Maine recruit Nicholas Wellenreiter(North Bay(OHL)) here as it is streaming live and free on YouTube. He is #28

The QMJHL season is starting and Moncton vs Newfoundland is being streamed for free right now. Kuzma Vronin is playing on the first line and the new recruit Spencer Thornborough is on the third for Moncton. Mikus Vecvanags is in net for Newfoundland.

Voronin and Thornborough were fairly quiet. Vecvanags looked shaky to me. Seemed to be kicking out a lot of rebounds and slow to recover after initial save. Often flopping to get back up. Bit him on the 2nd and 3rd goals he gave up. Let’s hope he was a bit nervous first game out. Good that he picked up the win though. And good he was out there in the first game of the season.

Watching Sokolovskii play for London(OHL) and he’s getting a lot of minutes. Had a beauty of a stretch pass assist to spring Cover for a goal. He’s showing much better mobility than I was expecting at 6’8” and 235 lbs. He’s got good stick skills and passes well. Doesn’t look out of place at all. I know it is just his first regular season OHL game, but I can imagine he’s going to ratchet up the central scouting rankings if tonight is any indication of his abilities.

In the same game Van Gorp is getting more minutes this year for London. He had no choice in the first as they spent most of it on the penalty kill, and he’s on their top pk unit. But I notice 5-on-5 Hunter has been putting him out there for face offs in their own zone. He’s been very active and doing everything but getting on the score sheet.

Earlier today I watched the Green Bay vs. Sioux Falls game. Wooten is playing in their top six on 2nd line at LW. He won a foot race on a blocked shot on the penalty kill, took it in on the goalie alone, and buried a short hander. He scored last night on a breakaway as well. He has good speed and quick release with accurate wrister. Goal scoring ability.

Voronin of Moncton(QMJHL) had a nice assist where he feed a guy at the far post for an easy tap in. Moncton lost their first 2 games of the season to Newfoundland, the first 2 games in their franchise history.

I agree on Sokolovsky, he's a little raw but he has all the tools to be a great player. He's much closer to a David Breazeale than Keenan Suthers mobility-wise and he's not afraid to use his size. I was also impressed with #18 for London who was another large, mobile defenseman.

Here is clip of that assist by Sokolovskii… https://x.com/LondonKnights/status/1969204775720796467

I agree on Julien Brown, he’s quite physical as well. He’s from New Jersey, so imagine the Maine coaching staff has already been watching him. He played with Lukas Peterson on NJ Avalanche U15AAA team.

In other news, Dylan Dean(Edmonton(WHL)) scored a power play goal cleaning up a rebound for his first WHL goal. Can see it 25 second in here: https://x.com/LondonKnights/status/1969204775720796467

Not sure why Poul Anderson isn’t playing right now for Edmonton.

Kason Muscutt looks like he isn’t committed to Maine any more.
Not that surprising. Muscutt doesn’t have much of a scoring touch. Skates well, is physical, and scraps a lot.

Jaden Johnson is another of the ‘05 class I suspect with not make the cut.
