RPI 2025 Off-Season: Help Is On the Way

Gorton is 6'3 200, I'd like to see you tell him that in person...ha ha.....you keyboard warrior. He is also the son of Montreal VP Jeff Gorton...FWIW.
So Lang will be able to look recruits in the eye and say with total honesty that all of our games are scouted by the NHL?

His immense height and father earned him all of 3 minutes of time on ice in 2 whole seasons at BU and he somehow managed to allow a goal during that time.

Edit: I know players are all effectively free agents every year and one or more transfers is the new normal, but they are supposed to be students, right? From Gorton's BU bio: "Enrolled in the College of Communication, majoring in advertising." How does that transfer to RPI? I know the 'Tute has Lally and a Communications Dept. in H&SS, but I don't think either one comes close to offering a degree in advertising. How many of those credits will transfer?
I was posting on eLynah and noticed that at some point H&SS became HASS. The A stands for Arts.

Looking at the roster I like the depth. I don't think we'll be skating someone like Lucas Matta at forward or Brody Maguire on D (both hard-working guys that I'll bet were good teammates, but not truly competitive at this level). The unanswered question is in goal. We're dependent on the new guys, Krawchuk, who was playing very well in the OHL until he committed to us and then went into a prolonged funk (injury?) before rebounding a little at the end, and Bruveris, who racked up even worse stats than our goaltenders albeit with an even worse (hard to believe huh?) team. If one of those guys breaks out we will be very competitive in our league. If they don't......

As for Gorton, we shouldn't forget that he was playing on a team that had 9 draft picks at forward and several strong players behind them. Yup, he was probably in over his head and one might speculate that they brought him in because of his dad, but Lang knows all that and took him anyway. He appears to have been a good, but hardly BU class, player in the BCHL. Perhaps he can get some time in our bottom six or at least give us even more depth there. Two players are never the same, but Chase Zieky, who could barely get on the ice for a couple of Providence NCAA tournament teams, turned into a contributor for us. Let's give the guy a chance to see what he can provide. I was joking, but at least it will ensure some NHL eyes will be on our roster.

I'm a skeptic when it comes to NIL impact on hockey, even at big schools. It's a niche sport and no better than the #2 winter sport at a lot of big schools. While some hockey programs bring in nice revenue, the dollars are nowhere near what you can bring in for top football and basketball. For hockey, it's really down to how much the boosters will contribute.
It’s not a comparison to the TV money of football and basketball. It’s a comparison within the sport itself. The big time schools & athletic departments are investing in all the sports at scale. RPI and the other non-D1 ECAC aren’t dancing to the same sheet of music.

As good as any. Did any of them post their numbers on Instagram or elsewhere?

I was expecting him to land with a ECHL team. I think his head coaching days in the NCAA D1 are over. Good to see him land a head coaching job. Rapid city is a cool little place. Black hills right in your backyard. If you like outdoor activities it’s great.
From his public interactions I liked Dave Smith and wish him well. However, it tells us all we need to know about our recent history that this is the only citation in the press release, "He most recently served as Head Coach at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York for the last eight seasons (2017-2025). " Not a single accomplishment during that period was cited nor were any players from his Engineer teams named.

Agreed! He seemed like a good guy. Wish him well but man he was the worst coach RPI ever had. Good grief it was tough watching his teams. Maybe his style fits ECHL hockey best ? High scoring zero defense.
