RPI 2025 Off-Season: Help Is On the Way

RPI baseball moves on after a 10-0 win yesterday. Today will be a bit difficult as we face Johns Hopkins and have to beat them twice in one day. Should be tough considering their record this year is 41-3!!!! The one loss we suffered after the rain delay hurts as we come into this elimination round with Hopkins already with one loss while they have zero and need to just hand us one more loss.

I really don’t know what to make of this guy. As noted, Miami was awful. They were so bad we beat them 2x on the road. So it’s hard to judge based on two seasons of stats that I’m being generous if I call them mediocre. It looks like he had a couple of good but not standout years in the USHL before that. We just have to trust the new staff has done their homework and feel that he will work in their system.
As you said, all we can do is trust in the coaches to do they think is best for this fall....and then set their sights on bigger fish for Fall 2026.

Yup - and the truth of the matter is we have no real insight into any of these guys. The guy Bruno split time with (Bruveris actually played a bit more) and had similar stats is going to Minnesota - Duluth. That's a respected program that saw Miami up close and obviously felt the goaltenders were better than their beleaguered stats would indicate. I frankly have no idea what our team will look like in October, but just having some excitement about what's possible is a nice turn. Let's go Red!

They certainly had similar stats for Miami, but Ethan Dahlmeir was rated 4.0 by NZ while Bruveris received a 3.25.

Are you sure we didn't play Hopkins' lacrosse team? ;)
No, but Hopkins seems to have teams in several sports that are top tier. This baseball squad is 42-3 with almost all the games being blowouts. If competing at the Division I level would probably do almost as well and be a contender. Congrats to our boys though who had a great season and made it through far enough to get to face them. Same for our lacrosse team. Would love to see our hockey squad have a winning percentage even close to either of the two above.

With all the upheaval and all the new faces, impossible to know much about next season. That alone makes for at least an exciting start and will just take it game by game for a while to see what indeed we have. No way for any prediction for the how many games we might win overall or in the ECAC but hoping we can surprise everyone with a turnaround season!!

FWIW, a thread was started a week ago on eLynah about how each team is trending. https://elf.elynah.com/read.php?1,269437 Take it with a grain (or a tablespoon) of salt, but the original poster wrote that RPI, along with Clarkson and Princeton, is tending up.

As far as i am concerned, the only opinions that are going to matter will have to come from Coach Lang and those who are working with him and for him. At this stage i am not sure that even they can venture much of a projection about what they have going into next season. They are going to have to carefully evaluate everyone they have, see how they can fit the pieces together, and perhaps discover what needs to be worked on first to be competitive. After that they can look for what they might need to add to the mix. I have full faith that this group can do all of that and we should all be surprised and happy with what we get to see. I just do not know how long this process takes and at my age (and that of some of the others on this board) I hope it is sooner rather than later as i am not even buying green bananas any more. ;)

I put our recent goaltending woes squarely on the back of our horrific play in the D zone. Never have I seen a program fail to defend the back side pass more than recent RPI teams. Mathias Laing knows goaltending and knows how to coach it. But if you have a track meet occurring in front of your keeper on a nightly basis, it doesn't matter who you have in net. Also, I'm not sure what happened with Watson, either he was hurt and weren't made aware of it or he was on the outs with Smith. The guy didn't even get mop up time in the games we allowed 5, 6 , 7 goals against.

To further my point, Geisbrecht was tied for first in games played (21), 3rd in minutes played, and made 630 saves ---103 more saves than the next goalie on the list (Takacs from Colgate with 570).
I think that's a fair assessment. I wouldn't rule out other reasons, but I think injuries had to be an issue with Watson. We know he was carrying injuries at multiple points during his career, and I think that ultimately impacted his effectiveness his last two seasons.

Hopkins does, indeed, have a heck of a baseball team, with a powerhouse offense under normal circumstances.

I saw them play Dickinson last year on an April day when the temperature was about 40 degrees with a 35-mph wind howling in from left field. They still scored four runs in each game of the doubleheader.

When the two teams met again in the Centennial Conference final, Hopkins scored what for them was a more normal total of 15.

I heard that RPI had met Hopkins once before in baseball, back in 1966. RPI won that one, so our all-time record against them is even.

To the best of my knowledge, we have 9 returnees (5F, 3D, 1G), 10 players from the portal (6F, 3D, 1G).. My best guess is 7 freshmen (3F, 3D, 1G or 4F, 2D, 1G). We are just about done since I think we are limited to 26 players now. It will be interesting to see who Lang's first recruit for 2026 or later years is.
