UNH 2025 Offseason: Where in the World is MS7?

Deadbeat, er Norbert, so your solution is to increase the costs to food service providers via a tax with a recession coming. Tax tax tax - for others to pay and fur businesses owners to absorb. Spoken like the deadbeat that you are. Why don’t you reach into you pocket and contribute?
Yes. It is $.50 on a $100 meal, immaterial and solves a problem.

I think that you meant that the NH R&M tax was reduced to 8.5% in 2021, not 2001. I say raise the R&M tax to 10.0% and direct the windfall to upgrading the locker rooms at Towse Rink in the Whittemore Center at the Key Auto Group Complex, and buy out the last two years of MS7’s contract, of course. Any left over cash can be used to replace the carpeting in the Diamond Library.
Yes, typo on the year.

Similarly why not introduce a nominal personal income tax to all NH residents? Oh, that’s right, live free or die. Taxation is fascism- unless it’s being imposed on businesses instead of yourself.

So are you good with reinstituting the interest in dividends tax that was changed? Well when hospitals close, Medicaid is cut, and there is no mental health help then we can change the motto to free to die

Norbert:

"Yes, Potluck, your are correct. As a resident of NH, I do not believe in paying taxes on personal income ever but I do believe that NH should have a properly funded, robust state school with low tuition. All we need to do is put the tax burden on businesses and require out of state residents to pay tolls. The only taxes I believe in are those that people other than me must pay. So, I guess, I am a hypocrite and a deadbeat. Oh, yeah, I also blame the Governor for being stupid whenever he/she mentions that that state is not properly funded to pay for services that are the responsibility of the state."

You realize that a raise in the Rooms and Meals tax, taxes NH residents. Just because I live in state I don't avoid that tax. The rooms and meals tax isn't "imposed on businesses" it is collected by them, added on at the bottom of the bill, paid by the consumer.

You are against a Rooms and Meals tax increase as there is a recession coming so you want to institute and income tax instead?.

You want the state to commit more to the University - Norbert is asking for that. The state commitment you want is money, right?

Do you have coherent arguments or just contrary to everything.

Elwood, I wouldn't expect you to be able to follow the discussion. But since you tried to make a point....the cost of a meals and rooms tax is not absorbed solely by the consumer. Raising prices makes businesses less competitive. Any added cost to an item or product makes it less likely that it will be purchased by the consumer. Fewer sales equal less revenue. I think even Norbert can understand this, although it's unlikely Chuch Murray a/k/a Buford could. He wants Joe Faro and Sal Lupoli to cover any financial shortfalls at UNH.

Oh, and as for your argument that the Hotel and Restaurant taxes are aimed at NH residents? Sure, riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. I suppose the tollbooths are, too.

The entire problem with NH is its lack of a personal income tax. Buford calls such idiocy "our way of life". Simply stated, NH residents are running out of spending other peoples money. At some point, the hillbillies need to pay some taxes and meet their responsibilities. The notion that the hillbillies have the temerity to blame politicians for the fact that the taxpayers don't want to fund state services is LOL dumb.

Ah I completely see your point because raising income taxes doesn't take money out of the pockets of consumers. That income tax money is magic, it funds the state and doesn't decrease the residents spending power. Got it, magic money.

Potluck:

It is a rooms and meals tax - not separated. I suppose somebody could choose to split them like Mass does and even allow localities to tax on top of the state rate like Mass does. Lets take hotels, look at Boston 5.7% to the State plus 6.5% to the city... how dare you tax those businesses 12.2% FOR SHAME. Asking travelers both vacation and business to fund the state of mass FOR SAME. You need to get right over to the State house and use your amazing lobbying powers to change this injustice. (Still waiting on an update about your progress with Kels and Sherm...)

We can argue the merits of different tax policies. However NH is not the only state without an income tax. Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, and Wyoming do not levy income taxes. Washington does not tax income but does tax capital gains of certain high earners. Right now both Florida and Texas are big growth states. Many of these states have high Rooms and Meals taxes - Dallas for example 13% on rooms combined and 14.5% on meals. Making the the NH rate down right reasonable.

I already know your game. The response will be "you can't possibly compare NH to Texas". Well plenty of people from Mass like to come north winter and summer to escape the city and yes we in NH are happy to take your money on rooms, meals, and booze.

"Nominal personal income tax" Spoken like the true denizen of Taxachusetts you truly are ... what a fraud you've been on here.

Taxes, like tolls and other similar subterfuges, never ever go away. They outlive their initial purposes, and inevitably grow.

And at some point, you grow into an out-of-control bureaucracy, that tweaks and eventually ignores nominal.

Nah - hard pass, potty. No income tax and no sales tax. You keep your system, we'll keep ours ...

Yes Corky, you are trying to portray intelligence that is not there. There is no income tax in NH, so you are safe there.

Holy $shit I get it now, 1+3=7. That is Masshole math.

Let's try and lay this out so Corky can get it. You go out to eat, and the bill is $90 for F&B and then with tax it is $97.38. If you return the tax to 9%, your total is $98.10, a 72-cent difference. If the 72 cents is a deterrence, maybe you should not go out anyway.

This is a simple solution to solve budget holes that not only impacts some of NH but everyone from out of state. Better than an income tax. Oh by the way, places who get R&M tax keep a portion, which is more money for them that might keep prices down. You know that right Corkster?

NH native and Union goalie Kyle Chauvette transferring to UNH for senior year per UNH Hockey Blog
I will stop at this moment and say this, for whatever it's worth ... if it turns out that MS7 (in addition to the anticipated hemorrhaging of seniors) "only" ends up losing Conmy (his best player) and Babbage (spare part) to the portal, and is bringing in the Canadian Junior contingent plus this kid, and *maybe* one or two others to round out the roster, it would seem the rumors of him having "lost the locker room" have been a tad bit overstated. Either that, or UNH retained a slew of pragmatic kids who have indeed tuned out their coach(es), but are sticking around because they don't have any better options (bar Conmy) elsewhere.

No one at the U has reached out to contact me about my generous offer to front the buyout bucks in return for a piece of the future upturn in arena revenues, so at this point, I gotta think Souza will be returning for another 1-2 seasons in Titletown. Them's either goosebumps, or (more likely) black fly season beckons ...

This has been an interesting part about his tenure from my perspective as an outsider. It has seemed, through many of the dismal seasons, that the kids remain (on balance) committed to him. Again, this is from my observations on the outside: watching games, social media, press etc.

I imagine this is because he takes a "player's coach" approach which often results in popularity in the locker room with varying results on the ice, as we've seen from his time. In addition, as Chuck mentioned, it is easier to keep kids around and interested when they don't have many other options.

Souza clearly is not very demanding and is loyal to his players. Full schollys and no pressure. Many kids are looking for precisely that in a hockey program.

A mea culpa:

I have been very tough on Buford (Chuck Murray), Elwood (JB), Norbert (with good reason), and Grumpy (?) for a few months. I offer my very limited apology to the posters here for my at times overly critical approach to them, even though the substance of my comments has been precise and often times spectacularly accurate.

Nevertheless, it's spring and, well, the lovely weather has infected me in such a positive manner. I have chosen to forgive Elwood and Norbert. Grumpy made me laugh a few weeks ago so that changed things for me. I consider Buford to be my Rosie O'Donnell and, like Trump, i choose to leave him alone for now but that can change quickly as I am always prepared to jump on him.

In any event, the reason for my sudden change of heart is a combination of spring and my break up yesterday with my own personal Jordon Hudson. Not to go all Kinison on you, but it's amazing what a "wild thing" can do to a man. A relinquishment of my not so casual consumption of pain killers, alcohol, glue, and pesticides (otherwise known as Saturday night in Effingham, New Hampshire) also contributed to the new me.

So to all of you, except for Buford, i say SLAINTE!

With the CHL infusion of players, options that may have existed for outbound UNH have dried up. UNH was the only option for a certain segment of team and they know it, so they're staying put.

There is ambivalence in and out of the locker room, with both players and their parents. There is one faction that can take or leave MS7 as long as the scholarship dollars are offered. There is another faction, especially their parents, that aren't impressed and can't wait for their sons to graduate. As you'd expect, there is a mixed bag of opinions but one theme is a unifier of all parties, UNH Hockey isn't in a good place and radical change is needed to chart a new course.
