RPI 2025 Off-Season: HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Muse is not part of the process. Dumais is not going to take it.
By now they should be interviewing candidates so I'm a little surprised nothing has leaked. Before we hired Dave we knew he, BB and others were among those interviewed. We just didn't anticipate he'd be the choice. I suspect that you are correct on the two candidates cited, but you made a pretty definitive statement. Have you heard from your sources on the inside who is actually on the list? Murley was certainly not sharing any details although he also wasn't denying it when Lang's name came up.

Yes. I also like Dan Jewell. Dan has proven recruiting success and knows the lay of the land in Troy. Our recruiting went significantly down after Dan's departure. Coach Lang would be a great pick for all the reasons articulated. To Doc's point, I'm sure some of his players would come with him. I like what Lang brings to the table.
Duh!! "I'm sure some of his players would come with him."??? Possibly, if the Admissions Department here is now run like the Athletic Department was under a potted plant figurehead Athletic Department emeritus.

Can't even guess how many times over the course of decades I have heard AIC (only 90 miles or so from the Capital District) referred to by the "acronym" of Almost In College!!! Despite all the carnage done by recent past leader(s), not exactly going to soon start holding my breath until some of those guys get accepted by what is still one of the planets world renowned great ones!!! Really!!!

Watching the Big Ten championship game on Saturday, I heard a familiar name.

Ohio State came from 3-1 down in the third period to tie the game on a late goal by Gunnarwolfe Fontaine. (Michigan State eventually won, 4-3, in double overtime.)

RPI fans may remember that early in 2018, Fontaine gave a verbal commitment to attend RPI.

He never played for the Engineers. Instead of coming to Troy, he decided to play a couple years of junior hockey in the USHL. When he finally decided to play college hockey, he went to Northeastern.

He played for Northeastern in four seasons. Since the first of those four was curtailed due to COVID, he was granted a fifth year of eligibility. Rather than returning to Northeastern, he entered the transfer portal, and that's how he wound up at Ohio State - ironically, the alma mater of Dave Smith, the coach who secured that verbal commitment in 2018.

He led the Buckeyes with 9 shots on goal (seven of them on net) in last night's game. Hope whoever RPI's new coach is, he'll be able to recruit a few snipers like Fontaine - and actually get them to honor their commitments.

Today is 24 March 2025. There are 194 days until RPI's next game. It has been 15 days since there has been a head coach

This is based upon 4 October 2025 for the start of next season, and 10 March was the day that coach Smith was relieved of duty.4

It also helps if they don't have an older sister playing for Northeastern and perhaps more importantly another who played for Union. :D

He was one NE's top guys and put up around 100 pts. in HE..... then he topped it by having a 40 points season for tOSU this year.

That'll take any top candidates off the board for whoever is looking to hire this off season. I suspect we'll have news sooner than later on RPI's next leader....it wouldn't shock me if it came before the FF.
Or it could add one more top candidate to our list… I wouldn’t mind having a coach who won 5 league titles and a Natty in a 10-year span.
Before anyone responds to this post, I know it’s not gonna happen. Just wishful thinking.

I stumbled onto the job listing from RPI.... of note:

Expected hiring range: $275,000 - $325,000 per year
Pay transparency disclosure: The selected candidate’s salary will be determined based on factors that include the available budget, internal equity, and the final candidate’s qualifications, experience, education and other job-related credentials. This hiring range is provided as Rensselaer’s good faith estimate of the expected hiring range at the time of posting.

That's the impact of the NY salary disclosure law. I think that range is in line with what is known about several ECAC head coaching positions.

It’s also a raise. As to taking top candidates off the board, it won’t. So far we know of two openings and only one person can get each job. Assuming there’s more than two people looking for a head coaching job, and also assuming more than two of those could be considered “home run hires”

Not surprisingly, AIC has over 20 players in the portal. However, it appears that only a few are likely to be the type that would be solid contributors to a building ECAC program. We've had some success adding guys like Heidemann and Addamo from Atlantic Hockey that filled in scoring roles (although in the case of one of those guys I thought it came at the cost of some questionable play at the other end), but there's no point in adding middle to bottom of the roster guys that are probably no better than what we already have. The exception might be if they have a particularly strong 3rd or 4th line defensive specialist that could help on the PK. Hell, at this point I'd take anyone that could put in a steady short-handed shift.

Interesting, that besides for Nick Strom who entered the portal before Smith was let go, none of our players has appeared yet.
