RPI 2024–25: Come for the Hockey, Stay for the Football

Savory was lights out for us. That was a Dan jewell find from his days in the ushl. After that the goalie recruiting has fallen off a cliff.
He certainly was, but I’m confused by what Jewell’s USHL days had to do with it. Savory was playing Junior B in St. Catherine’s when we signed him. Where did Jewell see him?;

Jewell scouted him and savory did a camp in Bloomington when jewell was coaching in the ushl. I believe jewell invited him down.

The part I don't understand is that I didn't think during Dave's first few years that they were badly coached. There wasn't a huge amount of talent on the roster but he brought in a few transfers around the better players Seth left and we seemed to be going in the right direction. They were fairly disciplined and even made adjustments between periods (something I never saw from Seth and used to drive me crazy). All of that has gone to hell. The players (and I do give them some blame for this) continually take bad penalties (yes guys, for the 100th time, if you break or knock away an opponent's stick you are going to get a slashing or interference penalty) and our team defense (it's not just the guys on D) leaves passing lanes open and fails to pick up forwards between the circles, on the weak side or as trailers into the zone. Was the earlier structure because of the assistants? Was the guy that went to UVM really running much of the system and training? It's not like they've been successful in HE. Was it that the guys that graduated or transferred (Reilly, Ferner, et al) were just great leaders that weren't replaced? Was it just Owen Savory and even freshman Watson covering for a multitude of sins so they weren't so apparent? I just don't know.
Yes all of that and then some !

We continue to see the effects of the administration's decision about locking us down during Covid. The overreaction seen by our school administration can not be over estimated.
Yes it can Union had similar circumstances and we see how that turned out.

Savory covered up a lot of the deficiencies within the system. Haven't been a respectable team since he left.
Hot rumor was that Savory was not on full scholarship and thought after his performance He should be and was told by the staff (HC) to pound salt but I digress.

certainly true but I listed a year in which he was not on the team where they killed at an 87% clip. identity of the team changed after that 22 season

It’s perplexing to say the least.
It is not perplexing. It is team defense.
No one on this team knows the value of getting the puck across their own blue line. Watch how many time a game that one of our players skates up to the blue line and goes back only to make a pass to the opposition. I cringe every time I see that and I see it too many times a game. We make blind passes in out defensive zone that turn into shots or goals against.
And last but not least, they refuse to make the easy play to get out of our zone and try some crazy cross ice pass that comes back to bite us.

My thoughts exactly for the past 2 seasons. Sums up a great deal of why we have 20 losses per season.

Aspy what’s the over under we’re looking at a new coach in the next month or so? You think it’s happening or we running this nightmare back again?
I'm going to take the easy way out...I'm not sure. Like all schools they're squeezed financially. It will have to come from the trustees. We still have an outdoor tarp under our ice surface so I don't see a sense of urgency abt the state of the program.

Keep it out the middle and towards the wall. Chip it off the glass if you don't have anything.

It’s perplexing because the coaching staff seems to have no answer for everything you mentioned which is all true. Making the same mistakes the past two years. It’s crazy

I agree. They try and skate or pass in the D zone. Cornell just hits the puck along the boards out of the zone. The forwards do the rest.

Interesting stories about Jewell and Savory, I wasn't aware of either. I wondered how we found a guy from a Junior B league D1 teams don't even scout. Good catch to spot his talent. I don't know if Jewell would have helped stem the decline, but I see he has been promoted to Associate HC at Merrimack. They are like us in that for the most part they are struggling in the third and fourth quartiles of their league, but given their resources the fact that they aren't bringing up the rear every year should be appreciated.

The only part that doesn't add up is Savory leaving because of the scholarship situation. I don't doubt he came in on a partial or even walk-on agreement given where he was playing when recruited. However, he was enrolled and ready to play his junior year in November 2020 when the season was cancelled. Only then did he transfer. If he was unhappy with the money they'd allocated in '20-'21 you would think he'd have transferred in the late spring or summer before paying the bill.

I posted this on the recruits thread, but I will post it here also since not everyone reads that. This article states that one of our recruits is receiving $500,000. Even if RPI is paying players and it includes tuition and it is over 4 years I don't believe that RPI would give anyone $500,000.
