Wisconsin Hockey 24-25 Improving With All Due Haste.

Gramme doesn't appear to be the answer. Put Castro in. There was a shot of the bench and Hastings was chewing out Dyck.
Should be chewing out the entire team.

Years ago Wisconsin beat a team USA with Chelios on USA….now they’re getting their asses kicked by a high school team.

“Oh, but Solo, they’re the best high schoolers in the country!!!”
Yeah, I don’t care about that. At no point should this team be embarrassed at home by high school kids…but here we are. IF Hastings is the guy, and to me that’s a big IF, this appears to be a full 4-5 year top/down rebuild.

They all should be embarrassed by this, no more than Coach Mike Hastings. This is an unacceptable 'effort' after what I'm sure was a week where everyone was great with their dailies.

Did the coaching staff really believe that the goalie trio we have would lead us to the NCAA Tournament? I know they get hung out to dry too often, but they still give up goals on routine shots.

They have two D1 victories, over Ferris State and Robert Morris and 13 losses.

And to think I almost bought two tickets to go to this.....

That tells me everything. I’m beginning to believe Hastings is NOT the guy for this job.
The biggest red flag to me regarding Hastings is that there has factually been no improvement in this team over the season. We are making the same mistakes we made on day one, and making them on a regular basis. There seems to be no accountability. Look at what Penn State did this year to turn it around.

It’s been a rough year and this is another terrible result. I’m having doubts Hastings is the guy. I was his biggest fan and excited to have him come to Wisconsin. Now he’s had two years where they have played their worst at end of the year and this year his first losing season as a coach. This year has been a disaster. They need a roster overhaul in all facets. At a minimum by end of next year there has to be marked improvement and be playing their best hockey at the end of the year.

Exactly! And that’s the biggest reason I’ve gone from concerned as hell to “defcon 1 this program is in bigger trouble than I imagined.”

The season will be mercifully over after next weekend.

The AD doesn’t care about hockey but if he did the bare minimum expectation for next season should be this (no excuses): at least 20
Wins, NCAA berth and at least 1 win in the tournament. Hastings should be told this in no equivocal terms.

No more fucking around.

If Hastings cannot create a winner here, I legitimately don’t think anyone can.

He’s had one great year and one terrible year. The terrible year came after all of his high level talent left. I’m not doubting him at all. He just needs to get his players in that work with his system.

I’m not sure I agree with either statement.

They backed into the playoffs last year and were not good when it mattered (7-8-2 to end the season). Couple that with the record this year and it’s been a train wreck other than the first half of last year. Hastings hasn’t had to compete in the big7, which is way tougher than the CCHA.

They did have a ton of injuries this year, particularly at defense, which obviously affects the backend. We knew the scoring was going to be tougher with who they lost. But the offensive struggles were way worse than I expected. Goalie play had been lacking. So in some respects they were snake bit this year. I hope they can get healthy, add offensive punch and this Canadian goalie is the real deal (which he appears to be). That’s my optimistic view at this point.

Bob Motzko first 2 years at Minnesota: 34-30-11
Mike Hastings first 2 years at Wisconsin: 38-31-5

Some of y’all need to R-E-L-A-X with the Hastings talk. The team was 6th in shots for per game and 10th fewest shots against per game. These are strong indicators that the system generates offense but the team is lacking finish (talent).

Even with the lack of offense, think of how many wins we would have if our goaltending was average (~.910 sv %). Scarfone was our best guy and he was tied for 71st among goaltenders for save percentage with at least 33% of minutes played. Let me repeat, 71st was our *best* guy. There’s only 64 D1 teams. 71st. Team save percentage was 60th out of 64 teams. I hope none of these guys return. Just start over from scratch and hope we can find a Dryden McKay.

Thanks for this perspective.

The thing that bothers me the most is the goaltending. Those are some big whiffs there. I really do feel bad for those guys. Their body language says it all.

I watched nearly every game. The shots the Badgers take are low percentage for a majority. The quality of opponent shots are way better. Some of that is related to poor defense, and silly defensive zone turnovers, but the point remains. And that d-zone turnover issue not been cleaned up either year (partially due to injuries to be fair).

I also think the dearth of talent Motzko has / had at Minnesota makes it much easier to turn things around and stay at the top of the conference (17 current draft picks, 14 each in Motzko's first 2 years). I don't see that level so far here in the recruits Hastings / Knott have gotten. Draft picks for Badgers (and I know that isn't 100% correlated to win %): Final year of Granato 11 draft picks, last year 13, this year 8. Next year will likely be similar to this year with losing 2 draft picks from the roster and maybe gaining a couple / three.

I have to keep it real. I am not going to sugar coat anything or be looking at it with cardinal tinted glasses. I'll relax when we are consistently winning 20 games per season. I am patient for one more year.

Based on the highlight video, the U-18 team had 5 goals on 10 shots to go up 5-1. Also how the heck do they not have a shot in the first half of period number 1.
