University of Maine 2024–2025: Freel-ing good

Love Barr. He’s the right guy for the job. The hockey has been hard to watch for long stretches. 2 majors in one game? Out shot the past 3 games? 2 goals in the past 3 games in 5v5? 0 for the last 25/26 in PP? How they’re tied for 1st in hockey east with BC is way off the charts in improbability.

Breen’s injuy, the failure of the 3rd and 4th lines, and too many turnovers by the lower D guys have weighted down the team. Carney and Lesakowski playing lately is a sign of it. Barr is totally right about “hope we don’t get scored on” mentality. Nadeau has been fight it all year long. Lots of lineup switches….hope the team wakes up and can come together in the post season. Getting to Boston and a 2 seed won’t matter much if they’re 0-2 at the end again.

Having said all that, they have a great chance to finish the year strong, win one in Boston and put together a run for the frozen 4 out of PA or wherever they end up. BUT getting out checked by the last team in the conference, a rival no less, when you’re the 1st team is obviously killing the coach. Hopefully it kills more than 5-7 of the guys too. Need 20.

Oh and Boija needs his own segment. Guy has been great. He is the best guy on the team. A hot goalie helps. Hope he comes back next year…

I want Boija in Orono for as long as possible, but something tells me Berzins and Ryder Shea(?) will be ready when called upon next year.

I dont understand the hockey east standings at all and uscho has a different calculation than hockeyeastonline.com so thats helpful

Says 10-3-5-1-0-4 which ok 10x3 is 30 plus 10 is 40? But we have 38. If the OTW is part of the 10 then 9x3 is 27 plus 10 isnt 38 either. I’m lost.

It is convoluted, here goes.

Maine gets 3 points for regulation wins, which is 9 regulation wins because 1 win was in OT. So from regulation wins Maine gets 27.

Maine got 1 OT win worth 2 points, so that gets Maine to 29.

Maine gets 2 point for each Shootout win, since there was 4, that gets Maine an additional 8 points to get to 37.

Since 4 ties ended in a shootout win, only 1 tie didn’t, so for that Maine gets 1 point to get Maine to 38 points.

BC has 11 wins in regulation for 33 points, then 2 OT wins for 4 more points to get to 37, then 1 tie for an additional point bringing them to 38.

It does seem cheesy we are tied because of shootout wins, but those are the rules all teams in HE play by.

Scholle has been so clutch for us in the shootouts. Feel like he’s been the odd guy out in terms of line juggling and keeps playing 4th line roles and minutes but I believe he’s 4 for 5 in shootouts this year.

Shootouts are the worst thing ever. It should be a nice, simple, W-L-T format. 2 pts for win, 1 pt tie, 0 pts loss. Nice and simple, how it used to be. I will die on the hill that a tie is an acceptable outcome for a regular season hockey game.

Maine is getting a steady diet of 1-2-2 neutral zone trap by the opponents last 3 games.

Yes its been working quite well to bottle up maine in the D zone and force the play up the boards or just chip it out.
Im thinking this is part of Barrs frustration showing in interviews, players are not doing what is needed or getting to where they need to be for their counter to the trap. Its take all five players synched to execute.
The noon stick n puck style and a huge fire in the belly (ok over simplified) wont get you long term success.is almost what he is saying.

Pretty amazing success so far for not doing things as desired.

Dont like them either, most especially in out of conference games when they are absolutely meaningless. How lots of people constantly walk away thinking the shootout won the game for them just reinforces how worthless they are.

Before Christmas I was praising the defensemen pinching down, forwards cycling out to cover the Dmans point, etc. That isn’t happening now. Planned conservative style now that we are in crunch time? Probably.
Missing Chabrier doesn’t help as he knew when to gamble and pinch in…

Before Christmas Maine feasted on a lot of cupcakes… Stonehill and RPI

When hockey East sets in you see the scoring slow down for everyone. They have no more cupcakes. I’m sure if you read enough other fan threads you will see fans complaining about their teams scoring.

I think compete level in low scoring games means a lot for preparing the team for the playoffs. Look at Denver last year… I think every ncaa game they played they only scored 2 goals, never more than that. Yet they won because they wouldn’t quit. That 2 OT game against UMass in Springfield was an amazing display of a team that never gave up.

I noticed the same thing. Perhaps that has a lot to do with the scoring drought. And perhaps it has a lot to do with how few goals allowed Maine has lately.

Nadeau back to top like, Neimo back in, Chabier may be back? Sholle to 3rd line, Komarov back to 4th

They can dress a guy and have him out there during warm ups but can only start with one extra skater. So maybe they want to see how he feels in warm ups. Mannix said he has had the flu this week.

I’d probably put Lesakowski back on D with Nobes and if Chabrier feels ok put him with Brazeale and have Dalton as extra skater. I think Lesakowski and Nobes would make a good pairing.
