2023 Womens Worlds and U18 Women’s Worlds

Another hockey tourney starts today!
U18 Womens Worlds in Sweden. Games are on NHL Network and TSN; we’ll see how much/which games and teams. It’s like those toys with a surprise in side. You know there’s something in there but you’re not sure what exactly til you get there. Finals may be on espn+ according to USA Hockey. The coverage has grown by leaps and bounds over the last half decade, this is worth celebrating.

Nicole Haase is there and on site. I have no doubt her coverage will be fantastic.

What I really like about the last tourney is that by the elimination round yes shots were heavily favored by the winning team but they were close games score wise. Should be fun to watch.

USA plays at 10 am eastern today

Canada’s game is on ESPN+. So it seems like for prelim in the US, USA games are on nhl network, and other group A games are on ESPN+.

Sweden advances.

Next quarter is on ESPN plus at 2pm Czechia v Finland.

i misspoke, Canada and USA have no quarter final of course, right to the semis.

Here's video of Nela Lopusanova, a 14-year-old Slovakia forward (14!), scoring a Michigan at the U18 Women's Worlds:

Nicole Haase has a good writeup about this on the Victory Press. She states that while the game was at an odd time for the United States viewers, that goal was all over the internet. There is interest in the women's hockey game, and we need to leverage that to get more viewing options.

Sweden!! Awesome moment for them. The way they'd been playing at the tournament, it had been coming.

Wow! Tough one for USA, but good for hockey. I see the 14 year old Nela from Slovakia scored another sweet goal today, batting her own rebound out of the air. This is a fun tourney; so grateful for the tsn/ nhl network/ espn plus / victory press coverage.

This is great for women's hockey! This was very close to being a Finland / Sweden gold medal game in U18! Will the strength of the European teams carry over in to worlds and Olympics? It would be great for the game if it did. Also, I wonder how many NCAA coaching staffs are now scrambling to up their games on recruiting from Europe?

What happened between the semi-finals and the medal games that can account for the collapse of the two European teams relative to Cda /US?

That’s a wrap on the U18 worlds. I’ve always liked Nicole’s “quotables” sections.

outstanding coverage once again. Like Nicole I noticed how quick this tourney moved. Too bad no rest day between semi and final. I think some of the inconsistency in scores or performances just comes down to the age of the participant as well. They are so young, still gaining the experience of putting a game behind and being ready for the next one. Solid tourney!

Now to the second half stretch of the regular season.

Great article by Nicole. Thank you Lindsay for posting the link.

Agreed, Nicole's "QUOTABLE" sections work well.

As for the schedule that's at least a day too short, I wonder if the Almighty Dollar was the culprit. Or in this case, the Almighty Kroner. Housing 4 hockey teams for an "extra" night isn't cheap. Still, the rest day should happen. But if there's need to balance the budget, cutting the rest day might be the path of least resistance.
