It's simplified, but the conflict is cause of the internet.
Those percentages have probably stayed the same for most of the 1900's... Higher education rates have eaten away at DERPS slightly, but it's been a small creep over time.
Once we hit the early 2000s, the internet allowed the shy, gay person in Alabama to reach out and connect with someone of similar beliefs in NYC. That gave the person in AL confidence to be who they are and break the JesusFuckistan mold. Conversely it allowed out batshit crazy uncles to connect with other people who think that the moon landing was faked and that vaccines carry microchips to connect with other fuckwits.
That's the thing that has triggered our current situation.

I think there is a lot of truth to this. The internet turned over all the rocks.
We have also reached a point where the civilized are asserting themselves. For a long time public space was pitched to the lowest common denominator. That is where the most dollars were for advertisers, and it was easier for the civilized to pay lip service to the masses than it would have been for the masses to tolerate anyone different than they. There were pockets of civilization in cities and universities and we stayed within them. The orcs didn't know about us so they belived the whole world was as derpy as they.
With the internet it's easy for rabble rousers to lift different cultures out of context and present them to the masses mockingly or as a threat. The boobocracy can't stand heterogeneity because it threatens the absolutism of their worldview: if it isn't white Christian and down home then it's evil and must be eradicated. Cynical politicians and demagogues run with this and become rich and powerful by fomenting the blind resentment of the hayseeds.
We're asking the derps to grow up after they have been children for 10,000 years, and they just aren't up to it.

The RWNJ Echo Chamber used to be a truly impressive structure. It trapped a hundred million of the most ignorant citizens in an endless loop of propaganda, regurgitating back their own biases and delusions like a codeine IV drip. It wrecked the country, and a few thousand families stole trillions from the treasury as those same dupes were bankrupted. It was terrifying.
Now it is just a sad shambles. A few confused drones walking slowly in circles, muttering about hoax vaccines and the benefits of tax cuts for the rich. The rest of the followers are either in jail for sedition or too sick from self-inflicted disease to even blurt these last dying myths.
This is how social growth happens. The obsolete side doesn't adapt. They just die off and their descendants adapt.
The grandchildren of today's conservatives will find them as vile as slave owners and segregationists. This is how humanity improves. The natural selection of cultures, leaving the failures to perish.
We have replaced them.

No, they'll do what they always do -- they'll just pretend nothing happened and they were never crazy. And then move on to being crazy about whatever is a topic then.
Conservatism is nothing but the perpetual resistance to making the world better by those who benefit from the status quo and do not care about the pain they are causing. This has always been it. Conservatives defended slavery as ordained by god. They defended religious persecution as... ordained by god. They defend misogyny and homophobia and transphobia. And, in perpetuity, they defend horrifying inequality. The camoflage changes: from God to economic efficiency to The Constitution to whatever other Vaseline they can slather the argument with to force it down, but the ostensible reasons never matter, only the result: preserve hierarchy.
Conservatives are the precise opposite of principled Americans. They are everything our principles are against. We are uniquely American, they are just another bullsh-t ethnostate like France or Russia, except this one's natives are fat white selfish pseudo-Christian imbeciles who care more about their guns and their bigotries than their own children.
It took a World War for Germany to get rid of theirs. Let's hope the Plague and their own stupidity excretes ours for us. Working so far. The sooner they are gone the sooner their descendants can change the subject.

One of the problems with that is the leftover problems just perpetuate their fear.
Like pretend that communism is coming to the western hemisphere so that fruit and sugar companies can make monopolies- which has the result of continuous fighting, and thus migration to the north. Which just leads to more fear and hate.
Or what we have done in the middle east- give money to a handful so that we can take their oil. Naturally making people VERY mad at the west. When they attack, then the fear just gets amplified to where we are today.
And Slavery. Which has never really been repaired. And now you see them wanting to make protesting illegal, since BLM is so scary to them.
If we actually tried to fix our mistakes, the world would be a much better place. Which will be very hard, as we have emplaced some nasty corruption and hate.
Pretty much everything R's fear and hate can be traced to their policies either creating it or making it 100x worse. And there's no way you can convince the people you talk about to admit the USA has any faults.

Plenty of us try. Plenty of Americans have brains and souls.
The problem has always been the Right holding us back, and now history is skull-fucking them so hard we may get an opportunity to catch up on the fifty years of flourishing they have cost the rest of us because of their greed and stupidity and malice.
They'll eventually reconstitute: the dregs will always mass together and metastasize their cancer. But for a brief time maybe we will be able to move forward without this anchor.
