Amazing

Cornell University shuts down.

"While…we have not seen severe illness in any of our infected students, we do have a role to play in reducing the spread of the disease"

And to fulfill their role in "reducing spread" they are sending 26,000 potentially exposed students home.

Omicron. Fast forward to mid winter=Chaos. This will be what cripples our healthcare systems come February. Not the severity, but the sheer magnitude of infections. Watch what happens in the UK over the next several weeks….
The spreadnecks heads are going to explode shortly as this rages through the population and mask mandates and closures return. They’ll get their “”herd immunity” wishes granted, but my vaccinated sneeze just may become their last unvaccinated gasp for breath….
Honest question. I can’t grasp it when the experts keep saying Omicron is replacing Delta. They talk like Delta just disappears once Omicron is present. Why? That just doesn’t make sense to me. “In addition to” I get, but “replaced”? How? South African data shows Delta has indeed almost disappeared once Omicron appeared. How the eff does that happen? Understanding this is way above my pay grade….
As more is learned it appears the new variant is more nasal, compared to Delta festering deep in the lungs. THAT just might be a good sign of the virus losing its ability to create severe sickness and if true, with it supposedly replacing Delta, MIGHT be a good sign….OR, the new variants mutate with a Sub-Saharan Ebola type of virus and then we’re all in Sci-Fi movie territory
and effed.

It's a competition for the virus. Omicron spreads faster, right? Every time is infects someone, that takes away a potential location for Delta- just like Delta did to prior versions. Eventually, the faster virus will just eliminate locations for the slower one, and it will just disappear. I don't think it's actually 100%, but WRT threat, one just muscles out the other. VHS to Beta, SUV's to station wagons, Pats vs the NFL...

This illustrates the basic concepts to Darwin's theories- the strong will survive, and for viruses, it's the one that can move the fastest.

Lets hope Omicron changes this to just a severe cold. That would be good.

Just got done watching a video of Ted Cruz whining that pilots and employees of United Airlines were being put on leave for not getting vaxxed, or fired. Last I checked they are a private company. I'm afraid that all the employees and CEO's of these private companies have been duped by the Republicans. They all are operating under the laws of the United States as written right now and yet Ted Cruz is now arguing that the government should be intervening where it has no right to intervene. Is he suggesting new legislation? What new legislation? I thought legislating was a local issue? Why is this a Federal issue? I thought everything (abortion, etc.) were State issues only.

I get so confused by all the hypocrisy.

Yeah, Omicron is spreading like wildfire. I expect the hospitals will not be able to survive very much longer.

Hit my two weeks post-booster on Tuesday, just in time to fly to Boston and attend my new firm's holiday party. Other than when eating, the party was the only time out in public that I didn't wear a mask (though airports make it easy since it is required). Got home last night, so let's see if I picked up omicron from a coworker now. Gonna stay home as much as possible for the next handful of days to be sure.

I’m very skeptical how much less severe it is. Like if it’s 1% less it really isn’t much of a help.

My hospital's chief of infectious diseases, in a town hall today, offered this:

"It's substantially more transmissible than even Delta. We do not yet know whether it is more, less or as severe. Initial data suggests it may be less severe, but we simply do not know yet. We cannot act like it is; we must act like it is at least as severe until we know for sure." Seems reasonable.

We've still got what, two weeks before we know how bad the hospitalization to case ratio is? I can't remember when omicron really got started. First of December?

Forgot to quote so I may be a bit off. Have to agree with who ever it was (Drew?) that said there is a subset of the population that just follows the rules. One of my parents and my FIL- are 2. If the mask is required they will wear it otherwise, if it is not required then it just mean there isn't a need to wear it. My FIL is just oblivious. We told him go get a Booster. He did it. If we hadn't he wouldn't have thought of it.

I agree with the financial piece- if you have not been medically advised to not take the vaccine then increased premiums, exclusion of coverage, etc.
And when they start rationing (which they will, and are already)- if you weren't vaxed then you go to the back of the line.

Watching the news as I type. Lists and lists of bad #s and we still have no leadership as far blanket requirement of wearing masks, needing vax to go places.

We are going to see a collapse of the healthcare system- that is pretty evident. What no one is talking about--huge burden, long term, on multiple fronts-
-healthcare in the community- lots of sequelae that will need to be treated and will affect volume of care needed, lack of availability for those who need their regular care
-economic fallout occurs when someone has a chronic illness- lack of financial resources, usually at least 1 family member changes employment status to care for the person
-issues re children- between the constant quarantining d/t exposure or positive cases- All sorts of disruption- kids having to stay home, teachers out, bus drivers out (our town is now down so many drivers they have to do double routes), daycare quarantining

Just some of what is happening in my town while the knuckledraggers are trying to go on with life as usual.

Too bad that the following population is not over 70%. We'd be in a much better place if it were that high.

And about the family who gets bankrupted by this- the rich who run that other party don't care. They seem to be counting on the unrest from those people.

I wonder at what point they realize dead people can't vote- and disabled people can't get to the polls- especially when they are trying so hard to make it impossible for them to do so....
