I read some article that was saying the Russian military leadership is purposely putting the Wagner group in harms way hoping they get killed off. So maybe Vlad knows what to do in this situation also?

Yeah. Eliminate anyone that might try to kill him.

The thing that boggles the mind is this exact thing happened to Russia in the Second Chechen War. In 1999.

They don't learn. This is what happens everywhere, in everything -- military, economy, industry, technology -- when the Right is in charge.

Right, their methodology for centuries has been to throw bodies at the conflict until victory or defeat.

Welcome back to the 80s, Russia.

That is the one thing that can really end Putin. His whole thing is he "rescued" the motherland from the privatization (pillage) shock. If Russia unwinds sufficiently that those conditions return, he's cooked. I have to think the next obvious step for Russia is a military takeover and a perpetual "emergency" military dictatorship, like Suharto in Indonesia.

They could justify themselves by citing the threats from China and NATO.

Hm, so how did all of those oligarch's make their billions?

(I get what you are saying, but it's pretty amusing that he's "rescuing" the country from himself and others just like him)

Whenever and however he meets his end, I think post-Putin Russia basically becomes a Chinese satellite in the battle for dominance over Asia. They were already trending that way and the fallout from the Ukraine war has pretty much cemented it.

While that seems likely, I openly wonder how it would change anything other than giving China a lot of resources. And many of those resources are quickly getting less demand over the next decade or so.

Some of Russia, maybe. I think it's much more likely the empire fragments into a Chinese client state in the east, a Muslim failed state in the south, and a smallish Slavic rump state in the west, like Austria after the Habsburg collapse. The pro-western areas on the Polish and Finish borders might make a break for it to get away from the Moscovite swine, too. I love the idea of Konisgburg as an international free city with no national government.

Bring back the Hanse.

It's tough to learn from your mistakes when there are no (such thing as) mistakes.

cf. every religious authority. There are literally no mistakes possible.

The church can never fail, it can only be failed.

Putin is loading up Belarus with nukes in a terrible game of chicken. He already has nuclear capability in Kaliningrad.

Poland, who has seen this movie before and knows the ending, has reponded by blockading and walling both their borders with Belarus and Kaliningrad.

Make Kaliningrad East Prussia Again!
