From a quick scan of the article, labeling changed. That extra dose that some have gotten out of the vials, now counting towards shipment, each vial has 6 doses (not 5 as previously labeled).

As someone who has figuratively watched fields go from growing grass to spitting out millions of respirators a day in under 4 months, I get it. I think we would both acknowledge there's a lot of nuance here, but I think the Biden administration taking over almost certainly played a large role.
Production issues being resolved, new guidance on # of viable vaccines doses per vial, etc. I do believe there was a phone call placed fairly early the afternoon of January 20th to Pfizer and Moderna laying out a plan to sort shit out and increase production. Someone else in this thread (or maybe it was Twitter) described it accurately, the threat of the DPA actually being enforced by a competent administration that seems to be ruthlessly efficient in its first week is probably a pretty big motivator. Joe didn't do shit but surround himself with extremely capable and motivated people who in turn did the same. Those plans almost certainly began before November and have been refined in the two months since he was elected. All he had to do was say "I, Joseph Robinette Biden, Jr...."
