Today was a special day for the AIC Hockey Family. We officially added a new player to our roster, signing Xavier Pereira to an NLI. He was brought onto the team because of his strength, his perseverance, and his unrivaled compete level. Our head coach Eric Lang expects him to be ready to go soon, and announced that he will make it into the starting lineup for next Saturday afternoon’s game against Canisius College. After all, it takes a little while to prepare to take the ice at the Division I level when you are a 3’6” tall, 42-pound five-year old with leukemia.
Through Team Impact, we met Xavier and his family before the start of the 2016-17 season, and he has quickly found his way into our hearts at AIC. He’s been a presence at our practices and games, and our guys have had the chance to become a part of his life, even helping out at some of his hockey practices. Today’s signing made it official—he is and always will be a Yellow Jacket. His continued presence, as our alternate captain Bryant Christian noted tonight, is a reminder that no matter how tough class or practice is, if Xavier can fight his battle and win, they can too.
Coach Lang was not being flip about the starting lineup, either. With permission from Atlantic Hockey Conference Commissioner Robert DeGregorio and Canisius College’s head coach Dave Smith, Xavier will be on the ice for the opening faceoff of next Saturday afternoon’s matchup with the Golden Griffins. He will be on our line chart, on the top unit, alongside Austin Orszulak and Bryant Christian.
