I follow this rule when making, say, a pot of chili - there should be a manly amount of heat, but not so much that it completely smothers the food's flavor and gives me the runs two hours later.

Oh you cannot ruin the food. A friend makes this chili, hot and spicy (he won't tell me the exact recipe) that warms you like no other. I mean, you can brush your teeth twice, chew a pack of wintergreen gum, and your mouth is still warm. It's definitely a sustaining heat. It's wondrous.

The first bowl? Oh, this is warm. 2nd-3rd bowl? Ok, this heat is not going anywhere. Any additional bowl? For the next two days you still have the heat/taste. It's amazing.

I like a little kick but not enough to make my eyes water or cause suffering. The flavor of food should be enjoyable, not painful or a test of manhood.

I don't like being in pain, but some foods that I prefer spicy do make my eyes verge on a tear or two. It's not overpowering spice or anything, it definitely adds to the flavor.

An example: my uncle will eat whole jalapenos, because he likes the taste. Now, they're not exactly the spiciest out there, in fact they are considered rather "mild." However, his eyes water a bit after a couple.

Different people have a different tolorance for spicy food too. My girlfriend absolutely loves wings that are super spicy. To each their own.

There is also a little thing called spice tolerance. Most people can train themselves to be able to handle spicy foods. Just takes the discipline to make yourself suffer a few times to get it going.

True. As a young'n, standard "hot" was never hot enough for me, still seemed bland. So I kept going hotter until I found my threshold for hot. Then I worked on hot/flavor. As for hot, there was a sauce called 99%, which had 99% habanero paste and 1% salt/vinegar. Yeah, that was harsh. Tasted good, but you are chugging milk just to get back to it being waterfall-tears bearable.

Unfortunately, my tolerance has dwindled to the point that a really really top notch jalapeno might make me sweat a bit. :(

mild salsa, frank's red hot, etc. is enough for me. Not a fan of OVERLY spicy stuff...

My answer isn't a choice on the poll.

A little kick, so long as it's not from cayenne pepper, 'cause I like being alive.

I swear cayenne pepper is becoming more and more popular and ending up all over the place where I don't expect it. The world is out to kill me.

I'm allergic and that stuff will make my throat close. Breathing is good.

So, I have no tolerance for hot and spicy because I always fear there will be cayenne pepper.

looks like a lot of whiny vagingas in here.

I love heat. My stomach and bowels don't so I can only punish them once in awhile, but I LOVE eating brutally hot wings. You know, the ones that make you sweat, your lips puffy and clear your sinuses. Nuclear hot. Bonus if they have a good flavor to go along with it, but really, after one or two you can't taste anything anyway.

Hooters 911 wings are decent. Buffalo Wild Wings "Blazin'" wings are very good. I'm not a huge fan of buffalo flavor in general, so if you can manage to make something else really hot I like it, be it Jamaican Jerk, Cajun or what have you.
