Place your nominations for the Worst Call (or non-Call) of 2021-22 NCAA Mens Ice Hockey Season here.

Final rankings will happen at the end of the regular season.

I have no dog in this fight (frankly, when these two play I cheer for the ice, the boards, the glass, and the pipes), but um ... yeah ... that was a hook.

Congratulations NCHC official Tom Sterns on your nomination for this prestigious award.

When a player stops skating, he's admitting the call that should be forthcoming. What was the ref signaling right after it happened?

I enjoyed Bob Motzko having the audacity to call that a dive and the weak statement from the NCHC that a penalty or PENALTIES should have been called.

One of the axioms driven home to new officials early in their training is, "when everyone in the building including the mice know it's a penalty, you'd better have your arm in the air." It will be interesting to see if this individual's name turns up on NCHC box scores at least for the foreseeable future.

You noticed that arm twitch too. I think he was going to call it but realized the marble* was in the other pocket.

*Old joke about certain referees who keep a marble in their pocket to remember who to call the next penalty on (left is visitor, right is home).

So glad you explained that - I'd never heard that one before. I did a search on "referee marble pocket penalty" and came up with Tim Peel of NHL fame.

I had an interesting, if frustrating, conversation with a friend the other day about game officials changing how and when they call things late in the game or late in the season. It started based on the Giants/Dodgers check swing call. She wanted the first base ump to call no swing because "officials shouldn't be deciding games." (My wife's comment was, "Isn't that their job??") She said a no-swing call would allow the game to continue so that it could be "decided on the field". She couldn't see that if it had been a swing - which is what the ump honestly believed it was - the game HAD been decided on the field. Wanna guess what team she has/had season tickets to?

A quick check shows the last two penalties of the game, the only two in the third period, were against Minnesota.
The game-tying goal (to get to OT) was scored by SCSU on the second of those two powerplays.

The marble was in the SCSU pocket (meaning they were getting next penalty).

The tug on the jersey/breezers of the SCSU player initially happens behind the net so likely the official at center ice didn't have the best look. The two players are coming towards the official in the corner so he may not have had the best look either. Couple that with the game is in overtime which means whistles get put away... and this is what you get. It's an EASY call to make seeing a replay, but in the moment live, in OT... it's not as easy.

As another poster mentioned, I would like to know what the official in the corner was indicating with his hand motion. Was he signaling it was a dive and thus indicating to play on and there would be no call?

As for two potential penalties, I'll once again go on the record that you should NEVER call a penalty AND a dive on the same play. If you feel a penalty occurred, then it wasn't a dive. If you say the player took a dive, then no penalty occurred. Period.

Except that embellishment is different from diving. Embellishment is exactly what the word means. Yes. A penalty occurred. But the player also embellished (exaggerated) the effect of the penalty. Diving is going down when no penalty occurred.

Rule 68 - Diving/Embellishment

68.1 Diving/Embellishment -

A player shall not attempt to draw a penalty through any exaggerated or deceitful action. A diving penalty is a standalone penalty. PENALTY—Minor for diving.

A player who has been fouled shall not exaggerate the impact of the foul. An embellishment penalty is called in conjunction with an opponent’s penalty. PENALTY—Minor for embellishment.

Well at least Motzko came out and walked back his dive comment. Apologized to Perbix and admitted it should have been a penalty on the Gophers only.

Terrible no call all the way. I don’t care the Gophers were called for penalties in the 3rd that lead to the game being tied up. They were legit penalties.

At least it was an OT loss so it has less PWR impact.

Outside of the ending, pretty entertaining games both nights. Two really good teams.
