More details coming in about the women's hockey tournament for the World University Games.

NCAA players will be participating for the first time in a tournament that to my understanding has largely been ACHA club players for Team USA, who has never finished higher than 3rd.

Participants:
Canada
Czechia
Great Britain
Japan
Slovakia
United States

The teams will play round-robin at Maxcy Hall on the campus of SUNY Potsdam with the top 4 teams advancing to Lake Placid for the semis and finals.

Dates: Jan 12th - 22nd

Team USA (so far)

GM: Paul Flanagan (former Syracuse HC)
HC: Brendon Knight (former Syracuse AHC and current assistant coach at Utica)
Coaching Staff: Emily McNamara (Hamilton HC) and Melissa Piacentini (Dir. Of Hockey Ops at Northeastern)

Players announced so far:
G - Gianna Meloni (Yale)
F - Haley Lunny (Providence)
F - Lydia Passolt (Bemidji State)
F - Callie Hoff (2022 Laura Hurd winner, Wisconsin- River Falls)
F - Annie Katonka (2022 Laura Hurd finalist, Plattsburgh)
F - Eliza Beaudin (2022 Laura Hurd finalist, Elmira)
F - Madie Leidt (2022 Laura Hurd finalist, Middlebury)
D - Erin McArdle (multiple-time All-American, Plattsburgh)

To be eligible for the tourney players must be ages 17-25 and a current university student or have graduated in the past year (Class of '22 like the players announced so far). There could be active D1 and DIII players involved which could affect their college teams as NCAA play will not be paused.

This is not a high profile tournament, to say the least, and I think that it would be a shame of NCAA teams lost players in the heart of their conference schedules.

My guess is any active players will either be bench players who won't be missed. If this tournament does mean more to the other countries involved then it does to the US and Canada they may pressure those players.

I think I read that the men's USA coach is leaning on active DIII players so it may affect that division more than DI if Knight follows suit. If not we might see Class of 2022 grads or players who ran out of eligibility but are still working on degrees

Clare Conway, a forward from MA playing for Worcester State has been selected for Team USA according to Worcester State. She is the first active player I've seen make the roster so far, but I cannot find a full roster.

Conway is Worcester State's leading scorer and has 18 points in 11 games for the Lancers this season, 7 points ahead of the next highest player.

Word is that former SUNY Plattsburgh forward Moe Tsukimoto will be on Team Japan. If true, this is a great comeback for a player whose promising NCAA run was cut short by a catastrophic off-ice injury.

Tsukimoto would be facing former Plattsburgh teammates McArdle and Katonka in the first round robin game of USA vs Japan

A women's semifinal has been confirmed for broadcast on ESPNU at 2:30 PM ET on 1/20. Doesn't look like the championship on 1/21 will be. Hoping there will be coverage on ESPN+
