Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

I like it, it's all coming together. On Wisconsin and Forever Forward.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

I see the light at the end of the tunnel. Hopefully the boys take a huge step forward this year. They have a tough schedule. And the top flight recruits just keep on coming.

Wasn't next year's class supposed to be the super awesome one with Caufield/Turcotte and this year's very good but not at that level? I do think this year's class really has developed since those thoughts were conveyed some time ago, though Caufield is probably in a class of his own.

Pretty sure Turcotte is seen as the better player as of this moment. Turcotte top 10 in the draft, Caufield top 20. Give or take.

OK, I'm going to say it. Why the **** can some BB and FB players "slip in" but not hockey? Yes, I know some recruits from other sports haven't got in, but why now? You're ****ing telling me the school or Sampo didn't see this problem before now? This ****ING sucks.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

The loss of Cruikshank is even more devastating if Ranta doesn’t come. And that was a self-inflicted.

I had the same exact thought. Now, if Sampo is a goner, then they have $$$ suddenly available, it's probably a bad look but why not reach out to Grant? They wanted him, wasn't it a money deal that drove him away?

That part I do not get at all. Do you need a certain GPA or SAT score to get in? That's all I can think of, there isn't any way all of sudden he's 2 credits short of humanities when these things get planned out years in advance. Or he didn't pass certain course? The UW women lost a player in similar fashion 4 or 5 years ago, she was a studette, ended up @ Q.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

You've got to be kidding me already with this crap. Let's hope they get it figured out.

It appears the BU faithful are totally oblivious to this Sampo deal, at least from what they are posting anyway.

There are several reference to Sampo on the BU recruiting thread, while the BU off-season thread is focused on Tkachuk's departure.
Don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. If Sampo does end up back on the market, BU now has a full scholarship open. Doubt that many other schools do in mid-August.

Did check out a few articles and video clips. Consensus seems to be: strong shot and skater, good finisher; needs some work on the defensive end. Can see why UW fans are upset.

Re: Wisconsin Recruiting Vol. IV - It's all coming together

Wisconsin has a different English as a Foreign Language requirement than other schools do?

Bizarre.

BU has one of the most international populations of any school in the country. I wonder if that somehow gives them the means to provide assistance to students in a certain score range.

The TOEFL is what kept Max Letunov from getting into BU, so there is a standard that has to be met, I guess it is just lower than at UW.

If this is the case it's a bunch of bull****. Im sure the kid speaks and understands English well enough to get through class. I bet there are literally hundreds of admitted students that somehow get a pass with an unacceptable TOEFL score. These kids from Nordic countries speak better English than most Americans. Unfukkenbelievable.

BU does have a giant Chinese student enrollment, but I doubt that BU has any more means to provide assistance to foreign students then a huge school like UW does. Especially for athletes who have tutors assigned anyway. BU's TOEFL requirement score is 90-100, UW's is 95-105, but the main difference is that the BU admissions board can just waive the requirement on a case by case basis. UW rules don't provide for anything like that.

We should keep in mind that the Minnesota score requirement is 79 and NoDak is 70. Seems possible that BU shot to the top of the rumor mill mainly on the strength of Tkachuk's signing with the Senators.

Sampo speaks English quite well, by the way.. He's also completed his last two years of HS in the US and has done well enough in class and on testing to meet UW's relatively high admissions requirements otherwise. To me, if Sampo ends up elsewhere solely because of TOEFL score, it's a massive failure on the part of the UW staff and also to some extent, Sampo's advisor. Like most all schools, UW also accepts a passing grade from an accredited College or University in a freshman level English Comp course. Getting that would have been simple with proper planning.

Sampo has all the tools to be a college superstar, and while this would be very bad this year, it's terrible for next year when UW could be really loaded for a serious run.
