Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

Is your 2017-2018 schedule out yet?

Not that I know of. With the demise of the Sue it will be interesting to see what N/C games fill in those 4 spots. It was be impossible to fill if other schedules are already locked in.

I would guess that for this season at least those schedule holes are gong to be primarily filled by "non-conference" games against other WCHA teams looking to fill holes - an opportunity to see even more of Minnesota and Ohio for you :).

This of course assumes that Lindenwood isn't sucked into the WCHA next season...

The problem with this is that the preliminary WCHA schedule has already been set, which means that North Dakota's demise creates only one team with a given weekend open. There are probably a few where that matches up with another team that isn't playing that weekend, but probably not most. So, unless the WCHA resets the schedule, they're often looking for teams outside that have the weekend open.

The WCHA is almost certainly going to have to reset the schedule to deal with the lack of notice afforded by UND (unless UND told the WCHA in advance which doesn't seem to be the case). And actually, at this point, I'm not sure that the schedule has been issued yet so it isn't technically a reset.

The simple reality is that the non-WCHA D1 teams have pretty much already set their schedules for next season and allocated their allowed non-league games via agreements with other schools (including the WCHA in some cases). They probably have also allocated their travel funding, which is non-trivial given the distance to the WCHA schools from everywhere else (Ohio State excepted). And the WCHA schools aren't magically going to fund two more trips East to fill the 4 game hole in each school's schedule that now exists courtesy of UND.

The chance that the Eastern schools are en-masse going to rearrange their schedules and travel funding to schedule games with the WCHA because UND decided to drop their program with no warning is low. Will the WCHA schools be able to schedule a few additional non-league games against other conferences - maybe. Will they be able to find 28 (4 for each team) additional non-league games from the non-WCHA teams and travel funding to make that work? Not a chance. If they want to fill the schedule, there will be non-conference games against WCHA teams and the WCHA really needs to adjust their schedule to make that work.

I guess one alternative would be to go to a 5 game schedule against each conference opponent this season (30 conference games instead of 28 this year). But then they would have to reduce their non-conference games, which seems bad also (except less travel).

An odd number of teams is an odd number of teams. Playing another WCHA team doesn't mean everyone would then be playing; it would mean some other team is idle.

Unless they both had a n/c hole the same weekend, then they could play for fun, but wants to play the same team 6 times in the regular season. I am fascinated to see how this plays out.

For the heck of it, I looked at the 2016-2017 schedule to see how weekends there were when 1) UND was playing a conference series and 2) at least one WCHA team was idle (and so could theoretically pick up UND's opponent for a NC series).

There were two: Oct 14-16, UND played Mankato, and St Cloud was idle; and Nov 11-13, UND played Duluth, and three teams were idle.

So, four of the 28 game-holes to be filled in could have been filled that way.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

Both weekends are set! You will be happy with the opponents...

Come on, you can't just toss that out there like that, you must have one heck of an insider connection......despite your hideous handle. ;) Or have UM and UW simply agreed to play 8 regular season games?

I know they are each playing a weekend NC series against the same opponent.

Actually the UW NC series will be a TH/FR tilt

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

The Olympic team used to play MN regularly, probably Wisc as well. I'll bet there are several national teams with open dates...

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2017-2018

There is a tweet that Megan Trupp has committed to UW for 2017/2018. I do a google search and there is no such hockey player of that name. There is a Canadian CrossFit Games athlete of that name and the right age......system confused.

Mark Johnson is now bringing in people from all walks of life with the intention of turning them into goalies.

I get it, the coaching is that good. They don't call "UW Goalie" U for no reason. I still am very perplexed about that commitment.

The CrossFit girl does play hockey. I haven't seen any other confirmation of a commitment though.

I haven't seen any other confirmation either, that is why I am fishing. It doesn't make a lot of sense be bring in a marginal player when UW has lots of F's for the next 2 years. Even if UW loses Pankowski, Clark and Shirley, they still have 12 F and they only carried 11 last year. The following year they would have 16 then.
