Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

T.T. Cianfarano is no longer committed to Wisconsin. She confirmed today she is now looking into Minnesota, Minnesota-Duluth, Northeastern and Quinnipiac.

Holy cr-p. This will be even worse if she lands within the conference.

Just not the rodents or UMD........this sucks BAD.

I'd love to know her reason.....could it be academics?

This sucks BAD, did I mention that? What a kick in the nuts.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

If academics are the reason for Cianfirano for not coming to UW then how will she get into Minnesota? Aren't their requirements similar to UW's? Anyway, despite losing her I still believe the incoming class of 2014-2015 is one of the strongest in the country. I have seen 4 of the 5 players in action over the last two years and they are all very talented. Coach Johnson could put the three forwards - Pankowski, Wellhausen, and Clark together and they would be a fomidable line -AS FRESHMEN! Rolfes IMO is the best incoming defenseman in the country and Williams offers size and strength as well. This will be an exciting group to watch as they mature over the years!

Yes, but similar doesn't necessarily mean exactly the same. A lot of universities have a list of specific courses that need to be taken that don't match up with other schools. So it's possible to qualify at one place and not qualify at another that's roughly similar.

That said, my guess is that there's something else going on here. That's particularly true since the article didn't actually quote anyone when it said academics were the issue. It pretty much just implied that they were without really pinning it down.

My understanding is that Wisconsin places a greater emphasis on test scores whereas Minnesota relies more on high school curriculum and grades. Someone very close to me was accepted at Wisconsin (and all other schools she applied to, including Michigan) but was wait-listed at Minnesota. I'm sure there are countless other examples where the reverse would be true, as each individual situation is different.

I wish I could disagree .....

Wisconsin has let in athletes with ACT scores below 16. http://www.cnn.com/interactive/2014/01/us/college-scores/index.html

That small sample shows that they did make a few admission exceptions for football, but very few as the number as a percentage came to just 2%. And I think it's probably not a coincidence that the few exceptions involved the sport which by far is their biggest revenue producer for the athletic department. For sports that operate at a deficit I'd be willing to bet a fair sum that their admission requirements are more consistently applied.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

Now that I've had 24 hrs to digest this bitter food, it's sad for her personally that TTC can't attend the school she wanted to, but that's the way life goes sometimes. It must be a bitter pill for her as well. I wish her all the best and my only hope is that she does not attend UMD out of the 4 schools listed. Thier f-bombing coach does not represent the coaching faternity very well as shown by that appauling display she put on in Madison this last year. Hopefully this new wcha commish has a set and will stand up to inappropriate behavior like that, especially out of a coach.

UW's incoming class is still loaded, but losing her firepower does push UW further behind the rodents instead of getting UW more on par with them.

Re: Wisconsin Badgers 2013-2014 Season

It's possible that the Cianfarano situation won't work out that badly for Wisconsin. For one, they could have been experiencing a bit of a scholarship crunch. At the time most of this class was recruited, it was likely that Brittany Ammerman was still on schedule to graduate in 2014, so they may not have had a scholarship left for her for next year, unless the incoming class took a hit. As for Cianfarano landing elsewhere in the league, both Minnesota and Minnesota-Duluth look to be rather full. UMD just graduated a class of Jamie Kenyon and not much else, and another planned senior in Brienna Gillanders took a medical redshirt. They are adding nine players including four Canadians and three Swedes. Normally, it takes some amount of scholarship money to land an international player; I can't imagine there is much money left in Duluth. Minnesota graduated four players, and adds four rookies plus Kessel and Stecklein back from the Olympics. Unless someone is planning to transfer out, I'd think that the Gophers are out of scholarships as well. As long as a) Cianfarano doesn't turn into an All-American caliber player somewhere else, and b) nothing questionable was done to pull the rug out from under the student athlete, the long-term impact for the Badgers should be minimal.
