Why the long wait to the Frozen Four?

Anybody know for sure why the long wait from the Regionals to the Frozen Four? This doesn’t happen for basketball and I feel all the interest that the games garnered this past weekend goes away with the long wait. Also, it always starts on Masters Thursday for some reason, also taking away from some of the attention it could get. (Yes, not everyone is a golf fan but a lot are and even the not so big golf fans follow the Masters.)

It used to be the same weekend. Hockey was Thurs/Sat, Basketball was Sat/Mon. I always remember Tom Mees during the BU-NMU 3 OT thriller in 1991 announcing the incredible news that Duke had knocked off undefeated UNLV in the semifinals.

I like the separation, though it is tough to wait. Good time for small injuries to heal (e.g. Cade Webber).

First of all, Basketball plays Saturday next giving it another day off than hockey would have in that situation. Hockey fans would have even less time to make arrangements for travel and hotel rooms. Most schools don't even have the tickets distributed until at least Tuesday making it nearly impossible to arrange travel at all and especially at a good price. I would not be surprised if basketball has blocked off hotel rooms for the participating schools to sell as packages as well. They can count on the schools selling out their allotments and thus can do this. Not so sure all employers in the area would be willing to let employees out on short notice for hockey but for basketball the local media attention is far greater and that is unlikely to be an obstacle. So to answer simply, it is too quick. Why not do it on a Sunday-Tuesday instead having a 5pm start on Sunday to avoid going up against the Women's Basketball Final and then having Tuesday all by themselves. An extra 2 days could work.

Also more so now. The women’s basketball tourney is becoming a cash cow for ESPN and they don’t want to have to work around it or any competition for it on their network
