What if Union moves beyond Assano?

Just asking—if the ABC {Asano Barcomb, Claudia} regime were to end, what would the steps be to rebuild this program, and should it remain D-1?

Rebuild? The program is built as well as it ever has been. Not saying they are setting the world on fire, they clearly aren't especially down the stretch, but 7 wins is a lot for them and 8 of their top 10 scorers are either freshmen or sophomores and 1 is a junior. hey certainly aren't going to win a National Championship tomorrow, but this is as good of an outlook as that program has had, ever.

Somewhat lengthy discussion on this topic in the thread "Who goes first Lewis or Linstad?" in the back half of the thread. Summary:

- Barcomb has been in charge for 6 seasons
- They are losing by less but still not winning and had 0 ECAC wins this season - bad season from that perspective
- Last year's recruiting class was relatively strong, but next year's recruiting class is pretty thin as currently identified
- Different opinions on whether she should or should not be able to recruit successfully given the fact that she has no scholarships and is not in the Ivy League
- 50-50 opinion on whether her job is in jeopardy.

Agreed on the point where ECAC wins are concerned. Yes Union is more competitive but to not win a game in this conference is, well, embarrassing. No other way to describe it. The ECAC just isn't very strong and to not win at least one or two games even with their roster just doesn't speak well to the coaching staff. I would be sorry to see Claudia go but perhaps she would have greater success in D-2 or D-3?

Not to defend Asano's coaching record, but this from the die-hard fan of a team which looked at the time to be on course for winning the league, and which beat this last place team only 1-0? Top to bottom, the strength of the ECAC is probably better than it's ever been.

I agree. Perhaps the top team isn't as strong as in some years, but the bottom team is rarely going to defeat the top squad in any league. The fact that the 8th through 11th teams were bunched as tightly as they were makes it harder for the last team to get an upset. Union did come within a goal of that elusive ECAC win 11 times; there have been a lot of years where it wasn't close to that competitive.

So... in summary ... there is more parity in the ECAC except for Union, which continues to be unable to win a game.... ummmm, that doesn't sound like a point that Coach Asano can use in her favor. Usually, when there is more parity, everyone gets more wins....

I think you have to keep things in perspective. Look where she started from, and look where they are today. You can argue you'd want to see more wins at this point, but it's not like ANYONE has ever won there before, and she's got them the closest to getting to that point that they've been. They've definitely improved quite a bit.

I'm not saying she should stay or go, but you definitely have to evaluate success in each job on a somewhat different set of criteria

CAB got a 4 year contract extension in 2010. She isn't going anywhere right now.

Means very little - especially since there is only 1 year left on it. Coaches with multiyear contracts get fired all the time before the end of the contract, even in women's hockey. Worst case for Union is that there is some sort of buyout provision....

Oops, I thought 2 years left (of 4) which is why I didn't see anything happening....

Re: What if Union moves beyond Assano?

No question in my mind that the current coaching staff at Union have made good progress and should be given AT LEAST another year to see what they can do with this young team. However, one thing does trouble me about their performance this year...the dramatic difference between how competitive they were before Christmas versus after Christmas. Before the break, they were 3-3 in games against Hockey East (albeit the wins came against the two weakest teams there), they split with a very good Syracuse team they picked up 3 ties in 8 conference games (Quinnipiac, Princeton and Yale) and they beat RPI in a non-conference game (a team they lost to twice after Christmas). After Christmas they managed only two wins (against the worst team in the NCAA, Penn State) a tie against Yale, and 14 losses.

Re: What if Union moves beyond Assano?

:mad:Let's face it....Union screwed the pooch years ago....this is a D-3 school. Why the F they try to play D-1 hockey [mens team's very very recent success notwithstanding] is a JOKE.

Face it #2...they double screwed the pooch when they missed the chance to join nescac...that's where they belong...playing teams like Hamilton...they blew it. [and throw Colgate in the same pot].

[and throw Colgate in the same pot].

Not fair to throw Colgate under the bus. Didn't they just take No. 2-in-the-whole-country (Cornell) into OT? And you're saying they don't belong in D1?

Then where would Wesleyan play? Maybe the prep high school league if you are trying to slot teams

Yes, kudos to Colgate for that performance. In this case, I'd have to give lots of credit to the coach. Looking at the roster at the start of the season--or even a few games in--I thought Colgate would be hard pressed to win any games at all. As the season has progressed, they've caused fits for some very good teams. He seems to have done a lot in a fairly short time with what he has been given to work with.

I'm not sure that it's a coaching problem more than it is a recruiting problem! You can't compete with teams that have players that can put the puck in the net, This team as done as well as it has for the past four or five years because they have had exceptional goal tending. So many games have been lost 1-0 or 2-1 including top hockey east and ECAC programs, unfortunately the scoring talent has eluded this organization. Without a certain level of individual talent it is very difficult to coach plays.

There are several very good players headed to Union for next season and with a returning tier 1 goalie it should be interesting.

Anyway, there is plenty of sloppy play from top teams in every league!:D

Re: What if Union moves beyond Assano?

Colgate like several other teams are only were they are because their goalies have stood on their head! Nice season Rando!!!!!
