Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid
It is a step down in Academics, so it will not happen.
Not according to US News & World Report Rankings.
The ACC has one school in the top 10 (Duke), while the Big 10 has zero.
The ACC has 3 schools in the top 25 (UVA & Wake Forest), while the Big 10 has 1 (Northwestern).
The ACC has 7 schools in the top 50 (UNC, BC, Georgia Tech & Miami), while the Big 10 has 5 (Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn St & Illinois).
Even the soon-to-be ACCers Pitt (58) and Syracuse (62) rank above Minnesota, Michigan St, Iowa, Indiana, and Nebraska.
Florida St and NC St are the lowest-ranked ACC schools at 101, which is the same rank as Nebraska (the lowest-ranked Big 10 school).
The Big 10 fares much better in terms of receiving federal money for R&D. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education's 2009 rankings the Big 10 had 2 schools in the top 10 (Michigan & Wisconsin), while the ACC had zero.
The Big 10 had 5 schools in the top 25 (Penn St, Minnesota & Ohio St), while the ACC had 3/4 (Pitt, Duke, UNC & Georgia Tech).
The Big 10 had 8 schools in the top 50 (Northwestern, Illinois & Iowa), while the ACC had 5/6 (Maryland & UVA).
They're 2 of the best conferences in the US, probably #2 & #3 (though I didn't look closely at the Pac 12 -- can't trust a conference that doesn't play hockey).
