What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

What if: Notre Dame decides to go the ACC route and together takes Penn State with them. They could possibly provide the biggest conference TV contract, even larger than the Big10 so don't say Penn State would never leave the Big10 for the possibility to fit in with their geographic rivals for more money. If that is the case Penn State would no longer be counted among the 6 BTHC members. Could they possibly be the 12th Hockey East team then? Stranger things have happened but wouldn't that be ironic since PSU started this whole realignment.

What you just said.....

The B1G Mistake will not break up, unless a program folds. Period.

It is a step down in Academics, so it will not happen.

At that point teams would be falling all over themselves to join up with the Big Ten schools in a conference. More likely the B1G schools would play with 5 teams and not panic until they added a 12th team. Given the quality of the B10 schools not having an autobid wouldn't be anything more than a headache because they should still be able to get at least one at large bid.

LOL can this rumor just die. There is no way Penn State would leave the B10. No way whatsoever.

They would loose money for the Athletic Department.
They would loose money for research.
They would loose academic prestige.

As a state university in tough economic times there is no way they could not justify to the tax payers a reduction in revenue.

Not according to US News & World Report Rankings.

The ACC has one school in the top 10 (Duke), while the Big 10 has zero.
The ACC has 3 schools in the top 25 (UVA & Wake Forest), while the Big 10 has 1 (Northwestern).
The ACC has 7 schools in the top 50 (UNC, BC, Georgia Tech & Miami), while the Big 10 has 5 (Michigan, Wisconsin, Penn St & Illinois).
Even the soon-to-be ACCers Pitt (58) and Syracuse (62) rank above Minnesota, Michigan St, Iowa, Indiana, and Nebraska.
Florida St and NC St are the lowest-ranked ACC schools at 101, which is the same rank as Nebraska (the lowest-ranked Big 10 school).

The Big 10 fares much better in terms of receiving federal money for R&D. According to the Chronicle of Higher Education's 2009 rankings the Big 10 had 2 schools in the top 10 (Michigan & Wisconsin), while the ACC had zero.
The Big 10 had 5 schools in the top 25 (Penn St, Minnesota & Ohio St), while the ACC had 3/4 (Pitt, Duke, UNC & Georgia Tech).
The Big 10 had 8 schools in the top 50 (Northwestern, Illinois & Iowa), while the ACC had 5/6 (Maryland & UVA).

They're 2 of the best conferences in the US, probably #2 & #3 (though I didn't look closely at the Pac 12 -- can't trust a conference that doesn't play hockey).

6 Big Ten teams = Big Ten conference. PERIOD. End. Of. Discussion.

And if you add in Notre Dame and Penn State for the ACC it becomes lopsided in favor of the ACC.
Those lines would read:
The ACC has 4 schools in the top 25 (UVA & Wake Forest,Notre Dame), while the Big 10 has 1 (Northwestern).
The ACC has 9 schools in the top 50 (UNC, BC, Georgia Tech,Penn State & Miami), while the Big 10 has 4 (Michigan, Wisconsin & Illinois).

Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

The Big Ten is a better academic conference because they are all about research. The ACC doesn't hold to a candle to the Big Ten's research departments in fact the Big Ten would rather be known for developing a cure for cancer over both an outstanding football program and undergraduate departments. In their eyes it is tougher to be research universities than being known for undergraduate work.

Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

The Big Ten owns Penn State's TV rights until 2027.

Literally, a more likely result to drop the Big Ten below six teams would be Michigan's population dropping to about 800,000 people in another decade or two of the awesome economy here. Michigan State would probably have to close or drop out of the Big Ten at that point, while I root for the Hawaii Warriors club program after turning out the light in my home state.

This says you are wrong.

Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

I'm sorry, but any rag (USN&WR included) that ranks Miami above Minnesota in education is a joke.

Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

And second of all, the Big Ten has the CIC. That alone is a MASSIVE bump in academics that is rarely included in these stupid rankings.

Third. Why on earth would Penn State bolt to a conference where they would be giving up a crap ton in revenue?

Bingo! You absolutely nailed it.

Whatever the hell you're smoking, you need to pass it around for everybody. Come on now, don't be Bogarting it!!!

Re: What if scenario: Could the BTHC fall below 6 teams and lose an autobid

Nice try but that listing is for research universities only. A lot of universities have graduate programs that are very prominent in non-research fields as well such as Business and Law Schools so those figures you show exclude them from the list. Thus not all graduate rankings are shown. Even so, perhaps when it comes to 5th year seniors grad school information may make a difference but for the vast majority of students the undergraduate academics are what count. Most often students attend grad school at a different school than their undergraduate one anyway. The rust belt coalition of universities will do whatever they can to convince the populace that they are superior but the growth along the southern Atlantic coast will certainly sway a lot of that propaganda toward the actual knowledge centers. Besides how much research about tape can 3M keep convincing the government to spend.

You, good sir, are hilarious.
