Wednesday Women is back!!!!

Re: Wednesday Women is back!!!!

Glad to see you two back in action! Your candid assessments of the various teams are always well worth reading.

Re: Wednesday Women is back!!!!

I winced when I read this excerpt from Candace: "...Minnesota-Duluth is a mercurial team that, though struggling, I think is capable of beating any squad in the country except Minnesota." I would bet big bucks that the Gopher team and coaches do not share this sentiment as they prepare for this weekend's series in Duluth.

This is the quote I liked best:

How do you see the WCHA after Minnesota now that everyone has played at least six conference games?

Candace: I don’t know; alphabet soup perhaps?

P.S....Great Job by Arlan and Candace on the weekly reports.

She also mentioned looking forward to Saturday's BU - BC match-up, in which case, she should watch the preview tonight :p

No. 6 Terriers Top No. 3/4 Boston College, 4-2, in Season Opener
Freshman forward Sarah Lefort scored her first two collegiate goals as the No. 6 Boston University women's ice hockey team defeated No. 3/4 Boston College, 4-2, on Friday night at Conte Forum.

Recap | Box Score
The No. 3 Boston University women's ice hockey team will welcome No. 8 Boston College to Walter Brown Arena on Wednesday night to begin a home-and-home series. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Prior to the game, BU All-Access will air live from the arena lobby beginning at 6 p.m. Head coach Brian Durocher will be the first guest of the show, which will be hosted as always by Bernie Corbett and Brian Maurer. Other guests include Sean Escobedo of the men's ice hockey team, Dom Morris and Rashidat Agboola of the men's and women's basketball teams, respectively, and Nestor Taffur of the wrestling team.

With the game falling on Halloween night, the BU student with the best costume will win a brand new 40" HDTV. In addition, all student groups that bring a carved or decorated pumpkin to the game will win free food from Domino's or Raising Cane's.

BU (7-1-0, 3-0-0 WHEA) will look to best the Eagles for the second time this season, as the Terriers defeated BC (2-3-0, 1-2-0 WHEA), 4-2, in the season opener on Oct. 5. The Terriers have won four of the last five meetings between the two teams, outscoring the Eagles, 20-8, in that stretch.

Wednesday night's contest will conclude a five-game homestand, during which BU went 4-1-0 and won all four contests at Walter Brown Arena. The Terriers topped Maine (4-2) and Robert Morris (3-0) this past weekend to continue their three-game win streak.
Freshman Sarah Lefort was named Hockey East Co-Rookie of the Week after she scored twice in the win over Robert Morris. It is the third time Lefort has been named Rookie of the Week. She leads the Terriers with eight goals and is fourth on the team in points with nine behind junior Marie-Philip Poulin (3g, 12a) and seniors Isabel Menard (3g, 8a) and Jill Cardella (2g, 8a).

Junior Kerrin Sperry posted her first shutout of the season on Saturday, making 24 saves in the process. She improved her record to 6-1-0, with senior Alissa Fromkin collecting the Terriers' other win on Friday night against Maine.

BC enters Wednesday's contest after it hosted Minnesota-Duluth this past weekend, with each team earning a victory. The Eagles lost the first game, 3-2, before they topped the Bulldogs, 3-2, in the finale.

Three players are tied for the team lead in points with five, including freshman Haley Skarupa (3g, 2a), sophomore Alex Carpenter (2g, 3a) and sophomore Emily Field (1g, 4a). Field leads the team in assists, while Skarupa and senior Ashley Motherwell are tied at the top of the leaderboard with three goals each.

Senior goaltender Corinne Boyles has earned both of the Eagles' wins this season, including a 21-save victory on Friday against Minnesota-Duluth. Sophomore Megan Miller has started two games and lost both, though both losses were both one-goal defeats.

Following Wednesday's contest, the teams will conclude the regular-season series, barring a meeting in the 35th annual Women's Beanpot, on Saturday afternoon at Conte Forum. Game time is set for 2 p.m.

Re: Wednesday Women is back!!!!

And the lopsided scores continue. Did not see that result tonight coming either.

BU was off their game for sure. Just me, but I don't always understand the Terrier's line rotations. Seems like a select few are sometimes picked for an exhausting night, and it showed.

Candace said: "Also, we have a barnburner coming in Columbus, with Wisconsin traveling to Ohio State. I think it will give us a good read on whether Wisconsin has truly turned a corner, because as recently as last season, this is a series that wouldn’t have even been up for discussion, in terms of who would win."

While I admit I would have never predicted it, the Buckeyes were victorious in their last meeting with the Badgers last season, by a 4-2 margin in Madison.

Wednesday Women: Chaos in the East

http://www.uscho.com/2012/12/05/wednesday-women-chaos-in-the-eat/

Wondering if the authors could further clarify these two comments:

Candace: "For Wisconsin, which according to some sources may be without Brittany Ammerman and Stefanie McKeough for the entire year…"

Unfortunately I had to miss both games this past weekend, and I didn't hear what happened? If they were injured I certainly wish them the best.

Arlan: On paper, the Terriers should win this fight, but Shannon Miller will use every strategy in her arsenal in attempting to earn wins, so it won’t be easy for the visitors.

Also wondering what "strategies" Arlan might be referring to here? Something that Shannon might say in one or more attempts to influence the refs? Something she might throw? Something she might wear? All of the above?

McKeough hasn't played all season. Ammerman played in three games early. Nothing happened this past weekend regarding the health of either.

I don't know that anyone has been better over the years at getting her team prepared for a single weekend than Miller. Sometimes that has meant a completely different power play or defensive scheme. Often it has been motivating the troops. With this being the final games for a while, she can have her team empty the tank and not have to worry about coming back out again in a few days. The Bulldogs present a challenge far different than the average sub .500 team.

Thanks for the clarification. Assuming their non-playing status were to continue for the rest of this season, and their injuries are not career-ending, I suppose the odds are good that each will be redshirted for next year? Or is there a good possibility that might return for the second half this season?

We'll see what happens. I guess the question is, can she perform her magic with a team that's not as talented as in years past? I see that this also is BU's last series before the break, so you would think that they should be equally inclined to empty their tanks.

Very well put.

The Lamoureux twins, Michelle Karvinen, and of late, Josefine Jakobsen, are going great guns, but after that -- nothing. Next in team scoring are rookies Meghan Dufault and Becca Kohler with six points. Another freshman, Leah Jensen is back after an injury, so perhaps she can add to UND's secondary scoring. Consistent offense is important, because the goaltending remains hit or miss.
Candace on WW said:
...the Lamoureux twins are comletely integral to North Dakota's success. While the return of Michelle Karvinen boosted the offense, when the Lamoureuxs don't score, North Dakota is in trouble, as happened last weekend against RIT.
These comments are, of course, accurate. And they're certainly backed up by the scoring stats. But I was curious as to what the +/- numbers would look like, so I checked on the UND website. MLam is off the charts at +16; JLam has a very healthy +10. Jakobsen and Karvinen come in at +9. So at first glance, it's the same picture. But going just a little further, we see that UND has 6 forwards in positive territory, and most of the rest close to breaking even. The weakest number on the squad is -4. On D, 4 players are in positive territory. (Note I'm treating MLam as D in these counts.) Again, the very weakest number is a -4 on the year.

What does this mean? Well, the players on the lower part of the roster are carrying their weight for the most part; while the top half numbers are very strong. In a tight game when it's time to shorten the bench, you've got to like the players UND can put out on the ice. And perhaps more directly to the point, UND can put out two strong scoring lines when scoring is needed -- though maybe that means putting MLam up front in that situation. And the rest of time, at least UND isn't being hurt by a lack of depth. Anyhow, it's not as simple as just shutting down the Lams.

I think RIT might have a better chance against Ohio State, because the Buckeyes don't have explosive scorers like the Lammys.
The Lammys? Is that nickname actually used by players and coaches?:) No harm in having a little fun, but I hadn't previously heard that one.

Wisconsin moved up a spot while getting swept, but looked good in doing so, while the Buckeyes nearly pulled off a road sweep at Mankato, but had little success separating from the Mavericks.

I think Ohio State better come prepared to do battle. They haven't looked that great in the last few weeks, even if they did sweep Minnesota State.
Comparative Results against Minnesota State:
North Dakota = 3 of 6 points at Home.
Wisconsin = 5 of 6 points at Mankato; 6 of 6 points at Home.
Ohio State = 5 of 6 points at Mankato.

Sorry if we aren't winning the beauty contest. But in comparison to our closest competition, I'd say we held serve at Mankato.
