Re: WCHA Pre-Season Polls

Genoway was the preseason WCHA POTY in the Media Poll, not Connolly:

Preseason WCHA Player of the Year
Chay Genoway, North Dakota (10); Garrett Roe, St. Cloud State (5); Justin Fontaine, Minnesota Duluth (4); Jack Connolly, Minnesota Duluth (3); Jason Gregoire, North Dakota (2); Mike Connolly, Minnesota Duluth (1); Matt Read, Bemidji State (1); Evan Trupp, North Dakota (1)

Re: WCHA Pre-Season Polls

It wouldn't be right unless I tossed in the obligatory ...

The only poll that matters is the pole you raise a championship banner on.

Re: WCHA Pre-Season Polls

Right where I expected the Mavericks to be. Two new teams in the league, two places lower in the standings. And yet I keep renewing my season tickets.

I hate to overuse the word HERO, but you sir are the real deal...

Re: WCHA Pre-Season Polls

So much has happened in the off season.

MN is 5th/6th interesting. They must expect them to win more than 18 games this year.

Frankly the only way I think the Gophs hang in there is if the frosh step up to their typically high expectations...and they rarely do.

as Quiz put it to me, there are going to be 2-3 REALLY good teams this year, 2-3 REALLY bad teams, and the rest will battle it out for mediocrity. The Gophers could finish as high as 4th or as low as 10th. It really depends.

I think that's a perfect assessment. There are 3 groups.

UND, SCSU, UMD

Minnesota, Wisconsin, Denver, UNO, Bemidji, CC

Anchorage, Tech, Kato

Agree. Even so...Colorado schools can never be counted out to cross over to the top group. And I would put a couple of schools including Minnesota as having potential to slip down into the bottom group.

Re: WCHA Pre-Season Polls

I have to give Gopher fans credit, their sandbagging this year is exceptional.

I actually agree with you

I think the Gophers are much more likely to finish in the top 3 than the bottom 3. I'll point out that I don't think either is all that likely.
I would bet dollars to donuts that they will finish in the 4-6 range, with the difference in those spots being one point or one game.

I'll stick my nose out there for others to take a swing at, and say I think the defense is going to be better (losing Leddy hurts, but I think that is offset by Fisher's departure:p and the rest of the guys come in with another year of experience and weight gains in the off season); and really, the offense can't get much worse then it was last season. Cepis, Barriball, Budish with a year under his belt, Hoefel coming into his final year, and a couple very talented frosh should be enough to improve the GPG. I'm not saying it's going to be outstanding, but certainly improved.

I also really believe the attitude in the locker room is going to be different, starting with the coaching staff.

I agree we could be more improved this year as long as no one leaves at Christmas break :p The additions of Ault should help and as long as Kevin Wehrs of last year shows up or improves and not the Wehrs of 2 years ago the D should be better. Offensively other than a solid first line and a so so second line the rest of the crew could be begging for goals....

I don't disagree but I think the important point in that statement is 2-3. Cause one of the big 3 is going to disappoint and disappoint big time. Not sure which one but it's going to be one of them.

And one of those 4-10 is going to be really really good and nobody is going to want to play them at the end of the year. Not sure which one of them it's going to be either.

My postings earlier had the Gophers finishing anywhere between 3rd and 7th. I think 4-6 is too narrow for this team. I think they can reach higher and I think they can suck harder. All depends which way they want to go.

If they can score more than 2 goals a game this year I think finishing somewhere between 3rd and 5th is a distinct possibility. Although it is early yet and I still have my Maroon & Gold tinted glasses on.
