WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

TalonsUpPuckDown

Roll along you BG Warriors!
The fight for the Broadmoor begins in a couple weeks. Time to get the WCHA Pick 'Em Playoff thread open for business.

Playoff Seeding
Top 16 make the playoffs. Snake seeding for bracket pairings (1 vs. 16, 2 vs. 15, etc.) with seeding determined in the following manner based on regular season results:
1) Total Points (including bonus)
2) Points (excluding bonus)
3) Total Points earned during the final 2 (or 3, or 4, or…) weeks of the WCHA regular season including bonuses until the tie is broken. Basically the “hotter” player down the stretch is favored.

Playoff Rounds
o First round will consist of the Friday and Saturday WCHA Quarterfinal playoff games (March 2-3) with bonuses (no Sunday games, 8 games total).
o Quarterfinals will consist of the Friday, March 9 WCHA Semifinal playoff games with bonuses (2 games total).
o Semifinals will consist of the Saturday, March 10 WCHA Semifinal playoff games with bonuses (2 games total).
o The championship will be based on the outcome of the WCHA Championship game on March 17 plus bonuses.

Scoring
o Same as the regular season, other than games won’t end in a tie so 3 pts for a win, 0 pts for a loss.
o 2-3 bonus questions for each round worth 2-5 points.
o In all cases, ties go to the higher seed.

Good luck and bring home the hardware!

So after graciously accepting all those accolades it turns out I had a Steve Harvey moment. hawerchuck actually owns the #14 seed instead of Hatch_man. Sorry about that, Hatch. Good news is hawerchuck figured out my goof awhile back and already has picks in for the first round match-up with mbenecke. Since you entered picks Hatch_man, I'll post your results separately this week.

Sorry, gang...

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

Let's look at the first round match-ups. First up is the Mankato bracket:

Midwest Regional, Mankato , MN
#1 SweeneyHawksHockey vs. #16 <3_Blizzard - When it comes to NCAA hockey pick ‘em tourneys this player is in a class alone. SweeneyHawksHockey swept the WCHA Pick ‘Em season trophies while playing in every pick ‘em pool available on the USCHO Fan Forum AND consistently finishing in the upper quartile (that’s Miami State talk for “did pretty good”). A balanced attack between pick ‘em points and bonus points has been a huge advantage during the regular season and sets up well for a solid playoff run. The other half of this match-up epitomizes the phrase “gut check.” The player with the hardest screen name to pronounce phonetically started out as one of the hottest players this year before stumbling through the middle part of the season only to grind out a solid 6-week winning streak to fend off all comers. Don’t underestimate the possibility of <3_Blizzard storming to an upset here.

#8 GoNanooks vs. #9 John J. MacInnes – Through the second half of the season no two players have been as consistent as Go Nanooks and John J. MacInnes. Statistically these two players have been within 10 points or less of each other for the last 10 weeks of the season. It’s fitting that they meet heads up in the playoffs. This match-up is a coin flip…a true Pick ‘Em pick ‘em.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

Up next is the Marquette bracket.

North Regional, Marquette, MI
#2 Soulbeaver vs. #15 puckdude40 – At no time during the 20-week season was Soulbeaver outside of the top 4 in the standings. While finishing .001 away from winning the Mason Cup has to sting a bit, finishing with the second highest number of points makes for a very formidable playoff competitor. puckdude40 may be entering the playoffs as a #15 seed, but keep in mind he missed picking 10 games in the middle of the season (which really affected his score) yet still posted a pick percentage that is better than half the field. This match-up should go down to the wire.

#7 BGFan vs. #10 Mich Tech 64BGFan spent most of the season in the middle of the pack before going on a three-week hot streak after the holidays and finishing as one of the most consistent players during the second half of the season. Speaking of consistency, Mich Tech 64 enters the playoff as the #10 seed, has the 10th most number of points and total points, and is ranked 10th in points percent. The upside…#7 in bonus points.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

On to the East regional.

East Regional, Bowling Green, OH
#3 mbenecke vs. #14 hawerchuck - If there was a Rookie of the Year award it would go to mbenecke. He leads all rookies in total points (442) and points % (.668) and was the Pick ‘Em leader through most of the season. He’s not afraid to check his homer instincts at the door which makes him dangerous in any matchup, especially since he’s playing the first round at home. hawerchuck, one of the week 12 winners, scores more points when there are fewer weekly games than when there is a full slate of games. A deep run makes hawerchuck a dangerous playoff opponent.

#6 Wi.HuskiesFan vs. #11 beaverhockeyfan – When it comes to bonus picking there is a clear winner. Wi.HuskiesFan has led the field in bonus points since week 5 (the second week of bonus picking) while posting the 12th highest points percentage averaging out to a #6 playoff seed. The bonus plays a large role in the playoffs which sets him up well for a deep run. With six weeks to go in the season, beaverhockeyfan was clinging to the #16 spot before going on an impressive 4 week run to safely secure the #11 seed. One of the hottest players in the field heading into the playoffs makes this a marquee match-up.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

Finally, the West regional

West Regional, Bemidji, MN
#4 TalonsUpPuckDown vs. #13 Laker Dude - Starting out in last place for the first few weeks of the season and slowly working his way through the field is reminiscent of the great Ricky Bobby and TUPD did it while being the first player to pick teams every week. A real pace setter. The other half of this matchup brings current NCAA Pick ‘Em CEO Laker Dude who not only provides the inspiration for the bonus, but also landed the #13 spot after forgetting to enter an entire week of picks. Posting the 6th highest points percentage of the entire field (right behind TUPD) makes this matchup a heck of a lot closer than the final standings would lead you to believe.

#5 crossjcek vs. #12 potternmucrossjcek, the winner of the final week of the regular season, spent every week but one in the top 10 and early on looked to join the top players in chasing down the McNaughton Cup. On the flip side, potternmu spent the first half of the season hanging around the cut line before blowing us all away and winning week 16 with one of the largest point differentials of any weekly winner then coasting the rest of the season into the #12 spot.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

One correction. We are now playing for the Jeff Sauer WCHA Championship Trophy, if you care to change it or not.

Great job on the Pick'Em pool TalonsUpPuckDown! Should be a fun weekend.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

Thanks Wi.HuskiesFan for the correction...the Jeff Sauer WCHA Championship Trophy goes to the winner. I'll update that next week.

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

mbenecke posted the most points in the first round of the playoffs with 22 and advances to the quarterfinal round as do higher seeds SweeneyHawksHockey, GoNanooks, Wi.HuskiesFan, and crossjcek. For those of you who have cash on the line in your office pools, note that the entire North regional has been turned upside down with lower seeds puckdude40 and Mich Tech 64 pulling off stunning upsets -- here's hoping your brackets aren't busted too badly. Lastly, Laker Dude kicked my okole* up one side and down the other and advances to the quarterfinals. Gee, this was fun...what a great idea it was to have a single elimination playoff tournament.

The same form will be used to enter picks for both the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds (picks and bonuses). I'll try to post results after Friday night's contests so the field can see who advances to the Saturday night games.

Saw a pick for 35 goals by the road teams on Friday. The home teams better watch out!

Re: WCHA Pick 'Em 2017-2018 <<<<< PLAYOFF EDITION >>>>>

Quarterfinal round is complete. If you picked BG to win, well, you didn't fare so well. #5 crossjcek, will face #8 GoNanooks (upsetting #1 seed SweeneyHawksHockey) in the first semifinal game, and #15 puckdude will square off against Wi.HuskiesFan (who knocked off mbenecke by 1 bonus point!) in the second game. The field will be reduced to 2 after tomorrow night's game. Call your bookies and get your wagers in.
