WCHA Awards Thread

I figured I would start this up so that we can speculate who will win what. There is no banquet this year, so it sounds like we'll find out throughout the Final Five who ulimately gets placed on the different teams and wins awards.

Here are my thoughts...

WCHA First Team
G: Kent Patterson - Minnesota
D: Justin Schultz - Wisconsin
D: Jake Gardiner - Wisconsin
F: Matt Frattin - North Dakota
F: Jack Connolly - Minnesota Duluth
F: Mike Connolly - Minnesota Duluth

WCHA Second Team
G: Aaron Dell - North Dakota
D: Justin Faulk - Minnesota Duluth
D: Eric Olimb - Nebraska Omaha
F: Jason Zucker - Denver
F: Drew Shore - Denver
F: Jason Gregoire - North Dakota

WCHA Third Team
G: John Faulkner - Nebraska Omaha
D: Ben Blood - North Dakota
D: Chay Genoway - North Dakota
F: Justin Fontaine - Minnesota Duluth
F: Jaden Schwartz - Colorado College
F: Garrett Roe - St. Cloud State

WCHA Rookie Team
G: Sam Brittain - Denver
D: Justin Faulk - Minnesota Duluth
D: Derek Forbort - North Dakota
F: Jason Zucker - Denver
F: Jaden Schwartz - Colorado College
F: JT Brown - Minnesota Duluth

Player of the Year: Matt Frattin - North Dakota
Rookie of the Year: Jason Zucker - Denver
Coach of the Year: Dean Blais - Nebraska Omaha
Defensive Player of the Year: Jake Gardiner - Wisconsin

I agree substantially with your picks, with these exceptions:

I move Zucker to First Team and Jack Connolly to Second Team Forward.
I move Genoway to Second Team and Olimb to Third Team Defense.

That is how I would vote it, if given the chance. I don't think it's how it will turn out, however. I believe Mike Connolly will win POY and I don't think Schultz from Wisconsin will end up on the 1st Team Defense. In fact, I think Chay will probably get that honor.

I debated about Zucker on the first team, but Freshmen just typically don't get placed there. I do think he'll be Rookie of the Year though. What is interesting, is that of all the WCHA Rookie of the Year winners that weren't goalies (31 players), only two ever made First Team...Dany Heatley and Kevin Maxwell. There have been several goalies that have done this, most recently with Richard Bachman.

If Mike Connolly wins player of the year I will throw up.

Re: WCHA Awards Thread

Just curious, why Patterson for 1st team?

I agree this is one of the toughest calls, probably right up there with player of the year. If Dell gets it, he certainly deserved it. I just think that Dell is going to get dinged a little because of the extraordinarily stingy team defense played in front of him.

I hope Dell wins it. Funny thing is, maybe the most favorable statistics in favor of Dell as 1st Team are those posted by Brad Eidsness.
Some proof that Dell had to play a little goal to post his gaudy numbers.

I would switch out Roe for LaBlanc, and I would also have Jenson in for the Rookie team, not sure which defenseman I would have him replace though.

Re: WCHA Awards Thread

1st Team:

G - Dell - UND
F - Frattin - UND
F - M. Connolly - UMD
F - Zucker - DU
D - Schultz - UW
D - Gardiner - UW

2nd Team:

G - Brittain - DU (freshman came in to a team that was supposed to plummet and finishes second)
F - Shore - DU
F - Fontaine - UMD
F - Gregoire - UND
D - Faulk - UMD
D - Olimb - UNO

3rd Team:

G - Patterson - MN (Really wish I could put Faulkner in here, great job to put UNO into 3rd, but Patterson also did great to keep the Gopher wheels from coming off)
F - J. Connolly - UMD
F - LeBlanc - SCSU (not as big of a name as Roe, but bigger leader this year and Roe was nowhere to be found first half)
F - J. Schwartz - CC (originally I had Jordan George here, didn't realize J. Schwartz did that in just 17 conference games)
D - Genoway - UND
D - Donovan - DU

Rookie Team:
G - Brittain - DU
F - Zucker - DU
F - Brown - UMD
F - J. Schwartz - CC
D - Faulk - UMD
D - Jensen - SCSU (the first five picks were no brainers, but I have Jensen and Makowski from DU ahead of Forbort. The reason I say Jensen is not just offensive numbers, but as a freshman he was the most consistent blueliner SCSU had all season [though I realize that's not saying much]. If I'd seen Makowski play more and knew exactly how good he was inside his own blueline, I'd be fine with him in Jensen's place)

POTY: Frattin - UND
ROTY: Zucker - DU
COTY: Blais - UNO
DPOTY: Schultz - UW

Re: WCHA Awards Thread

I thinks its interesting, not necessarily wrong since he hasn't scored a ton of goals, but interesting that Jack Connolly is getting relatively little love here despite being 2nd in conference scoring with 38 points and 1st among WCHA players in overall point scoring with 51.

I think that happens when you've got Mike Connolly and Justin Fontaine on your line. Makes interswapping them not a big deal. I also wouldn't be surprised if one of the UW blueliners doesn't get screwed because of the other.

Good God Almighty!

How does UNO finish 3rd in the league, is currently 6th in Pairwise, have a woeful representation like this? It defies logic.

John Faulkner of UNO as the 3rd team goalie is a beautiful example.

Here is a guy that leads not only the WCHA in shut-outs, but the entire nation, who has taken a shut-out into the 3rd period of 13 of UNO's games, all while playing teams and players he's never seen before in a bunch of building's he's never been in before!!!

Third team? You have got to be kidding me!

Re: WCHA Awards Thread

Faulkner nearly singlehandedly cost me making the playoffs in my WCHA Fantasy League. He sucks.

Welcome to the WCHA!

I know.

I'm getting flamed in the WCHA playoff predictions thread for taking the "we aren't getting any respect" stance.

Goes with being the conference newbie, I guess.

I know this, my dad always told me that unless you toot your own horn, nobody is going to toot it for you. So, I will continue to toot UNO's horn when needed.

Re: WCHA Awards Thread

Shutouts are great, but in conference play Faulkner is 5th in GAA, 8th in save %, and 6th in win %. Among WCHA goaltenders in all games he is 6th in all three categories. I see no injustice in him being on the third team.
