Voting Rights

Taken from a fight with Hovey and transplanted here:

I would personally put every single line item of JLVRA on the floor for a separate vote. That would obliterate the Republicans' duplicity that it's overloaded. Fine. Then vote against the national holiday, considered alone. Vote against a national voter ID standard that will be given freely to everyone and must be accepted by every state for that state's results to be certified, considered alone. Vote against mandatory longer voting hours and against x number of polling stations per capita, considered alone. Vote against each one individually and let them show their true colors.

This is Jim Crow 2 and you guys will remembered with Bull Connor.

I actually think that would be a good choice for the D's. There are many parts of that bill that I either support, or could care less about. I have no problem with a national id, freely handed out, or longer polling place hours on election day. Election day as a national holiday seems silly, but fine.

I also don't have a problem with a required number of polling places based upon population.

I'm not in favor of the perpetual election, where we would have polling places open over multiple days or anything like that.

As for Bull Connor comparisons, from what I hear, public school history teachers are on such a short leash, I doubt they're even teaching him anymore.

A guy on reddit just changed my mind on a national holiday for Election Day:

Because retail and service workers have to still work holidays. In fact, holidays are generally busier than regular old weekdays.

And that's without the inevitable promotions the business owners will run in order to capitalize on the extra potential for foot traffic.

I find nothing wrong with his logic. This flips my opinion 180 degrees.

Now, as the same redditor suggests, the key is to stop just having an Election Day. Have a week. Or a month.

There is no reason it can't be both. A holiday on Tuesday and voting for the entire week. Or no reason absentee. Or...

Oregon's exclusively by mail pushed turnout from something like 55 to 90.

The Right will fight dirty to prevent higher turnout.

Since with republicans everything is projection, I am much more worried about vote counting than actual voting.

Their entire big lie claims trump votes were not completely counted and more votes for Biden were counted than actually happened. Much of what they are doing with the so-called limiting of voting opportunities is pennies on the dollar for what they are likely to do with the actual counting of votes, especially in the 2024 national election.

If I lived in Wisconsin still I'd be more worried with what the legislature is going to do post election day than what may happen in the weeks before it. If you believe voting is important, you can and must make the effort to vote. What happens with your ballot afterwards is what you should concern yourself with. Because like I said, with republicans it is alway, ALWAYS projection. Their votes were counted in 2020, just like mine was. But they have signaled they will do anything they can to not count mine in 2024, whether they meant to or they said it inadvertently.

I wonder if this can be a precedent for mowing down all their bullsh-t in other red states.
Maybe, but there’s no way this stops short of SCOTUS. The GQP quite correctly sees this as an existential issue for the party. If they can’t implement fascism just by rigging otherwise democratic elections, then they will have to move to more forceful means.

In that case their stooges on the Court will restore their nonsense. They now have sufficient hacks on the Court to destroy democracy unless we expand it. +6 to save the world.
